Les Coteaux near Vétheuil W669hand painted reproduction

In this little pochade, the hillsides of the Seine become a dense network of blues, greens and earths. Chalky escarpments cross the center, while the distant relief closes a valley rendered by quick touches. Painted in 1881, this oil on canvas mounted on wood measures only 14.4 × 22.1 cm; it belongs to the Musée d'Orsay, is deposited at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen and corresponds to Wildenstein 669.

Look at the work

A vast relief concentrated in a pochade of a few centimeters

The dark slope on the left descends towards light rocks in the center. The terrain then rises in several planes to a long blue ridge. The shapes are abbreviated but the valley remains perfectly readable.

The palette is limited to blue grays, muted greens, pinks and browns. The thick touches alternate small masses and oblique lines, adapted to the very reduced format of the study.

The tiny scale does not impoverish the landscape: it forces Monet to condense the relief, light and distance into a few colorful relationships.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A real outdoor pochade

The dimensions of 14.4 × 22.1 cm allow rapid execution in front of the pattern. The key remains direct and transitions are not smoothed.

02

Chalky cliffs as landmarks

The light accents in the center separate the slopes close to the distant hillside and give the scale of the valley.

03

A very constructed blue dominant

Blue, purple and green unify the landscape, while pink and brown lands warm up the closer planes.

Only one exact image of W669 is used in the listing and as the sole Shopify media. The best public image found measures 409 × 256 px; it remains at its native definition, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Maintain the rapid nature of the pochade

The reproduction must respect the visible keys without inventing details absent from the small original.

Color02

Preserve the chalky accents of the center

These clear marks are the essential depth markers in W669.

Matter03

Keep the blue ridge from afar

Its horizontal line stabilizes the eventful slopes of the foreground.
