A diagonal of barges in the foreground
The successive boats narrow to the left and give the canal immediate depth. Their dark weight balances the very fine silhouettes of the city and prevents the whole thing from dissolving in the snow.

Claude Monet · Snowy canal and silhouettes on the ice · Rosengart Collection
Amsterdam appears under the snow, seen from a bank where dark barges line up. On the light surface of the canal, small silhouettes move between the boats and the opposite bank. The central bell tower, the masts and a high chimney dissolve in a pinkish beige sky: the entire city seems held in the cold, but each touch retains movement.

Look at the work
The foreground follows the canal bank diagonally. Three covered boats form large brown and black masses, surrounded by bluish snow. A few tiny figures, painted with dark accents, give scale and lead the gaze towards the frozen surface.
Beyond the canal, the buildings are reduced to purple-gray verticals. A sharp bell tower dominates the center and a chimney rises to the right; their contours are deliberately absorbed by the atmosphere. Pink, ocher and blue passages prevent the snowy sky from becoming monochrome.
Snow does not remove color: it forces Monet to look for blues, pinks, greens and browns in what initially appears white.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The successive boats narrow to the left and give the canal immediate depth. Their dark weight balances the very fine silhouettes of the city and prevents the whole thing from dissolving in the snow.
Passers-by on the ice or the bank are not detailed. Their inclination, spacing and direction of their shadows are sufficient to suggest the walk, animation and extent of the canal.
Sky, snow, water and facades use similar values. Depth arises from small temperature variations: cold blues near the ground, purple grays in the city and warm roses in the clouds.
Reference image
The visual corresponds to Snow in Amsterdam from the Rosengart Collection, Wildenstein number 301. The reference image measures 1024 × 772 px and is preserved at its native definition in a real WebP file.
The barges combine brown, midnight blue, dark green and cream reflections. Treating them uniform black would remove the volumes and the relationship with the surrounding snow.
Its tip is visible but its edges mingle with the grays of the sky. A line that is too clear would artificially bring it closer and break the effect of winter mist.
The bank, ice and roofs do not receive the same whites. The bluish shadows, green passages and warm touches help separate the surfaces.
Documented benchmarks
Made in 1874, this oil on canvas measures 56 × 73 cm. It is kept at the Rosengart Collection museum in Lucerne and bears the number Wildenstein 301.
During his stay in 1874, Monet painted the port, the Geldersekade, mills, bridges and canals. This canvas is distinguished by snow and ice, which reduce contrasts and visually bring the city closer to the sky.
The Rosengart Collection presents the work as a summary of the impressionist concern: to transmit the sensation of a particular moment. Figures, barges and overcast weather are captured as passing phenomena.
The Rosengart Foundation brings together around three hundred works of impressionism and classical modernism. Snow in Amsterdam accompanies another painting by Monet, Church of Vernon, fog.

Presentation in your interior
This winter scene is suitable for a quiet bedroom, office or living room. A midnight blue, smoked wood or matte silver frame responds to barges; an off-white, light taupe or gray blue wall brings out the colorful snow.
