À propos de l’œuvre

Neige à Argenteuil, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Travelers to Argenteuil pink station · Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

Snow effect in Argenteuil W358hand painted reproduction

From a high window, Monet watches travelers follow a snowy path towards Argenteuil station. The dark silhouettes are distributed along a curve which crosses the composition, while houses, hillsides and fences blend into bluish whites. The painting captures the thickness of the snow, the daily movement of passers-by and the atmospheric transformation of the suburb.

Look at the work

The bird's eye view follows travelers in Argenteuil almost erased by snow

The path starts near the lower right edge, turns center then goes up left between the trees. Several groups of black or dark blue figures advance there. The elevated position allows you to simultaneously see the route, the snow-covered gardens and the city buildings.

At the bottom, a light house with a red gable and several buildings stand out in front of a blue hillside. A vertical chimney marks the right. The fences and shrubs in the foreground are indicated by rapid lines, as if the snow had reduced each object to a few colorful signs.

The curve of the travelers gives human movement to a landscape that the snow has almost made silent and abstract.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

One viewpoint from upstairs

The bird's eye view avoids the traditional horizon at eye level. The viewer dominates the path, fences and gardens, which gives the movement of passers-by a structuring role.

02

A curve animated by dark figures

Travelers appear in groups at different distances. Their silhouettes punctuate the large white diagonal and lead towards the buildings without a single character becoming the subject.

03

Whites enriched with pink, yellow and blue

The sky, snow and roofs share a clear range, but each area has its own temperatures. The brown and black accents of plants and passers-by stabilize this very bright surface.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The image corresponds to work 44-41/3 of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Wildenstein version 358. The high definition file was limited to 3,000 × 2,526 px then encoded in WebP, without oversampling.

Composition01

The path must maintain its continuous curve

The sequence of fences, embankments and figures makes its layout readable despite the abundance of white. However, too regular a curve would weaken the observed character of the place.

Color02

The buildings in the background are colorful but veiled

Pink, yellow, green gray and blue distinguish the facades. Their low contrast to the sky keeps the distance and the feeling of snow suspended in the air.

Matter03

Passers-by are accents, not portraits

A few dark touches are enough for coats, umbrellas and legs. Their precision is mainly due to their placement and their value in the light path.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This oil on canvas from 1875 measures 54.77 × 65.25 cm, or 54.8 × 65.3 cm rounded. Signed Claude Monet lower left, it bears the inventory 44-41/3 and the Wildenstein number 358.

Viewpoint01

Painted from upstairs in Monet's rented house

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art specifies that the artist observes the scene from an upper window. This height explains the importance given to the path, gardens and groups of travelers.

Subject02

Passers-by head towards the pink Argenteuil station

The museum notice connects the silhouettes to daily rail traffic. The station, which quickly connects the town to Paris, appears as an element of modern life integrated into the snow landscape.

Collection03

Donation from the Laura Nelson Kirkwood Residuary Trust

The work entered the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art under number 44-41/3 thanks to this bequest. The museum also publishes its alternative title Vue d'Argenteuil, neige and its Wildenstein 358 classification.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the high viewpoint and the curve of the path.
  • Distribute groups of travelers without expanding them.
  • Maintain the colored variety of whites.
  • Let the hillsides and buildings blend into the sky.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This calm and very light landscape is suitable for a contemporary living room, bedroom or office. An off-white, ash oak or gray blue frame reinforces the depth of the whites and lets the small silhouettes play their role of punctuation.
