The sunset warms the sky without erasing the cold from the terrain

The bare trees concentrate to the left and form a brown and purple mass. At their foot, low buildings and fences lead towards the group of houses placed in the center. The facades and roofs receive diffused light which softens their contours.

The snowy terrain occupies almost the lower half. Dry grass, furrows and small figures interrupt the whiteness. The very clear sky descends almost to the roofs: its pale yellows and cold roses envelop the village and give the motif its unity.

The setting sun is not painted as an object; it can be recognized by the color it deposits on each surface.

A depth stepped in flexible strips

The field, the houses and the sky follow one another horizontally, but the trees on the left and the traces in the foreground connect these levels. The composition remains open despite the presence of the village.

Snow never has a fixed color. It receives yellow near lit areas, blue and lilac in the hollows, as well as brown where earth and grass reappear.

Tiny but necessary silhouettes

Characters placed in front of houses give the scale of the terrain and prevent the clear expanse from becoming abstract. Their brief treatment corresponds to the rhythm of grass and marks in the snow.

The foreground remains irregular and alive

Grasses, clods and passages form brown or purple interruptions. Their dispersion avoids an empty white band and gradually leads the gaze towards the figures.

This oil on canvas measuring 53 × 64 cm is dated 1875 and signed Claude Monet lower right. It is kept at the Marmottan Monet museum under inventory 4019 and listed as Wildenstein 362.

Location01

A winter landscape painted in Argenteuil

Monet stayed in Argenteuil from 1871 to 1878 and studied the Seine as well as the streets, gardens and snow effects. This painting belongs to research carried out during the winter of 1874 -1875.

A sun effect rather than a narrative scene

The title emphasizes the observed phenomenon. The houses and characters locate the place, but the chromatic organization between warm sky, cold snow and dark vegetation carries the essence of the painting.

Donation Eugène and Victorine Donop de Monchy

The notice from the Marmottan Monet museum records the entry of the work on May 23, 1940 thanks to the donation from Eugène and Victorine Donop de Monchy. It is numbered 4019.
