Artwork description
Claude Monet · Giverny · 1886 · W1241
A row of pruned willows unfolds in front of a still light curtain of trees. Dark trunks punctuate the canvas while grass, blue shadows and young foliage blend into a pale spring light. Signed and dated Claude Monet 86 lower right, this oil on canvas of 73 × 92 cm belongs to a private collection and corresponds to Wildenstein 1241.

Look at the work
Six main masses of trunks line up from left to right, irregularly spaced. Their upper part dissolves in a network of thin branches. In the foreground, a large area of blue-purple shade alternates with beaches of yellow and green grass.
The palette is deliberately light: off-white, blue-gray, mauve, soft green and yellow. The darkest trunks set the rhythm without closing the landscape; behind them, the trees at the bottom are almost absorbed by the atmosphere.
Willows are not described one by one: their repetition becomes a measure of the outdoors, where each trunk receives a slightly different light and color.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The trunks form a sequence but never a grid. Their varied inclinations and thicknesses give the row a living presence.
The high branches are painted with quick, light touches. They mingle with the sky and the wood at the bottom, which deliberately reduces the contours.
In the foreground, blue and purple are not only used to darken. They respond to the yellows of the grass and give the spring light its freshness.
Reference image
A single exact image of W1241 is used throughout the file and as the sole media for the product. The real WebP measures 1,200 × 946 px and retains the native definition available without artificial enlargement.
Their spacing leads the gaze across the entire width. Too regular a row would cause the observed character of the pattern to be lost.
They must remain thin and mixed at the bottom. Continuous dark contours would weigh down the atmosphere.
It confirms the 1886 dating and contributes to the balance of the lower corner without becoming a dominant element.
Documented benchmarks
The sales notice documents Les Saules, Giverny, oil on canvas of 73 × 92 cm, signed and dated Claude Monet 86 and listed Wildenstein 1241.
The date painted at the bottom right allows us to fix the execution, even if certain publications placed the work later in Giverny's chronology.
The painting is reproduced and described in Monet's catalog raisonné under this number, which distinguishes this row of willows from the late weeping willows linked to Water Lilies.
The work reappears at the Hôtel Drouot in November 2023, lot 7, after several decades outside the public market.
