In Jeufosse, the Seine widens between two banks whose foliage changes from green to yellow, pink and red. Monet directs his gaze downstream: the Jeufosse hill descends to the left towards the Gibet hillside, near Port-Villez, while the water absorbs the colors of autumn in long, almost horizontal touches. Signed and dated "Claude Monet 84" at the bottom left, this oil on canvas measuring 60 × 73 cm belongs to a special collection. It corresponds to Wildenstein 916.

Look at the work

The Seine becomes a sheet of autumnal light where the vegetation on both banks unravels in reflected colors

On the left, a curtain of dark trees stands against a milky sky; its base reveals a thin bank and a few bands of shadow. The right bank, lower and brighter, advances diagonally towards the center. Its acidic yellows, pinks and greens form a vibrant contrast with the misty blues of the distant hillside.

Water does not mechanically reflect trees. Monet stretches roses, blues and greens in the direction of the current, then interrupts them with thicker touches near the banks. The sky and the river thus share the same silvery clarity, but their different gestures maintain depth and movement.

Sotheby's precisely identifies the direction of gaze: downstream, with the Jeufosse hill on the left descending towards the Gibet hillside in Port-Villez. This discreet topography gives a real basis to the colorful freedom of the painting.

The asymmetrical banks organize the passage

The vertical, dark mass on the left acts as a threshold, while the more open right bank guides the eye towards the bend of the river. Between them, the Seine becomes a corridor of light.

Two families of gestures construct the landscape

The reflections are stretched horizontally; the foliage and the hillside are laid by quick, diagonal touches. Sotheby's underlines this opposition which gives the painting its energy without breaking its calm.

Autumn is expressed without dominant browns

Lemon yellows, pinks, bluish greens and a few reds are enough to translate the season. The palette avoids the expected earthy tone and makes the transformation of the foliage a luminous phenomenon.

Preserve the mist of the distant hillside

The blue hill blends into the sky without a hard outline. It must remain readable behind the brilliance of the right bank while giving the landscape its atmospheric distance.

Series01

A countryside of around ten views of the Seine at Jeufosse

From his boat-workshop, Monet explored this meander located upstream of Giverny in 1884. It varies the direction of gaze, the season and the time in order to observe the metamorphoses of the foliage and the water.

Topography02

The Jeufosse hill and the Gibet hillside in Port-Villez

Daniel Wildenstein identifies these two landmarks in the downstream view. The composition therefore remains linked to a specific portion of the river despite the erasure of topographical details.

Provenance03

A work passed very early by Durand-Ruel

The merchant acquired it in 1888, probably from Monet, then sent it to his New York gallery. It then belonged to the collector Erwin Davis and appeared in several Durand-Ruel exhibitions from the 1890s.
