Sunset over the Seine, winter W574hand painted reproduction

A red sun descends above the Seine stuck in the ice. Its orange and yellow reflection crosses the cold water to the foreground, between blue and white plaques; the bank of Lavacourt forms a dark line and bare trees close the view to the right. Painted and signed in 1880, this oil on canvas measuring 60.6 × 81.1 cm is kept at the Pola Museum of Art under number 016-0035 and corresponds to Wildenstein 574.

Look at the work

The red disk and its warm reflection break through a debacle dominated by blues and greens

The horizon is near the middle. The sun, slightly to the left of the center, responds to the group of bare trees on the right; between these two accents, Lavacourt's silhouettes remain low and let the sky diffuse all its light.

The sky changes from yellow to pink then to gray-green. In the water, these colors become more saturated around the reflection, while the ice patches are bordered by dark blue, turquoise and purple.

Evening light does not uniformly warm the landscape: it opens an incandescent path in the middle of the ice and makes the cold areas surrounding it even more sensitive.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A small but decisive sun

The red disk occupies very little surface area, yet its pure color immediately catches the eye. Its enlarged reflection then leads to the ice cubes in the foreground.

02

Two banks which frame without closing

A dark advance enters the image on the left and a clump of trees stands on the right. Their asymmetry maintains the opening of the river towards Lavacourt.

03

An ice crossed by light

The plates are not only white: their faces reflect the yellow of the sunset and their blue borders indicate the water gaps and their thickness.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The only official image from the Pola Museum of Art is preserved in its native definition of 1,500 × 1,115 px then encoded in real WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep the pure red of the solar disk

It must remain small, sharp and more saturated than the sky, without becoming a large diffuse orange spot.

Color02

Preserve yellow passage in water

This irregular reflection connects the sun to the foreground and organizes all the depth; it does not follow a perfectly straight column.

Matter03

Keep trees straight and bare on the right

Their blue silhouettes form the main counterweight to the sun and give scale to the landscape.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Pola Museum of Art documents Sunset on the Seine in Winter, oil on canvas from 1880, 60.6 × 81.1 cm, inventory 016-0035 and Wildenstein catalog 574.

Location01

The Seine between Vétheuil and Lavacourt

Monet observes the village located on the other bank and the islands of the river from the surroundings of his house in Vétheuil.

Moment02

The thaw after the exceptional winter of 1879-1880

The breaking of the ice momentarily transforms the Seine into a field of moving plates; Monet follows this phenomenon in several lights, until sunset.

Version03

The Wildenstein 574 canvas

Its format of 60.6 × 81.1 cm, the small red sun and the bare trees on the right distinguish it from the large sunset W576 preserved at the Petit Palais.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 574 version
  • The little red sun above Lavacourt
  • The yellow and orange reflection between the ice
  • Bare trees on the right bank

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This horizontal landscape is suitable for a living room, dining room or bedroom. A petrol blue, gray green or warm beige wall and a dark frame reinforce the contrast between ice and light.
