Claude Monet · The painter's son asleep with his doll · Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek

Jean Monet asleep W108hand painted reproduction

Jean Monet sleeps on a white cloth, his head tilted to the left and his cheeks still red. His striped blouse creases around his body, while a little white doll rests against him. Monet paints his son without an official pose: the close framing, the muted tones and the speed of the touch preserve the intimacy of a domestic moment.

Look at the work

Child's sleep observed at a very short distance

Jean's face occupies the upper left part. Her closed eyelids and half-open mouth are shaped by a few pinks, ochres and grays. The wide-striped garment leads the gaze diagonally to the right hand.

In the foreground, the white doll has a pink and blue face. It stands out against a darker brown blanket. Behind the child's head, an oblique trellis and light fabrics suggest the cradle without describing the entire room.

The proximity of the framing transforms a very simple family scene into a study of breathing, facial warmth and the weight of fabrics.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A painted face without a hard outline

The red cheeks blend into the grays of the forehead and eyelids. This gentle transition restores the relaxation of sleep.

02

Stripes that give volume

The dark bands of the blouse change direction with the folds. They describe the torso and arms better than a continuous drawing.

03

The doll as a secondary presence

Her white catches the eye in the foreground, but her simplified face and small size keep her in the role of sleeping companion.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The unique reference is a photograph of the work taken at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. The file of 3,576 × 3,003 px was cropped at the edge of the canvas, then reduced without enlargement to 3,000 × 2,550 px and encoded in WebP.

Composition01

The head remains tilted to the left

This position creates the large diagonal of the body. Straightening the face would make the feeling of deep sleep disappear.

Color02

Whites have many grays

Linen, blouse and doll are distinguished by different temperatures: cold blue, cream, gray and small pink touches.

Matter03

The bottom trellis remains incomplete

A few diagonals are enough to suggest the cradle. Too precise a drawing would draw attention away from the face.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Made around 1868, this 42.5 × 50 cm oil on canvas is kept at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek under the MIN 2807 inventory and identified as Wildenstein 108.

Family01

Jean, first son of Claude and Camille

Jean Monet was born in Paris on August 8, 1867. His father represented him several times, from the cradle to portraits of childhood and adolescence.

Subject02

A portrait without social staging

Unlike the large portraits exhibited at the Salon, this canvas is attached to a private moment. Sleep suspends all voluntary expression and lets Monet observe the colors of the face and fabrics.

Photograph03

The work visible in its museum environment

The reference image directly documents the painting at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. Its high definition allows you to read the free touches of the face, blouse and doll.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Preserve the inclination of the face and the half-open mouth.
  • Model the cheeks with roses mixed with gray.
  • Follow the stripes with the folds of the blouse.
  • Keep the doll clear but secondary.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This intimate portrait is suitable for a bedroom, family space or reading corner. An off-white, light wood or soft gray frame respects the delicacy of the fabrics and the warmth of the face.
