Square Saint-Pierre at sunset, F275Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Under a pale yellow sky, young trees and three silhouettes line the blue paths of Square Saint-Pierre; Van Gogh almost reverses the colors expected to suggest evening fall.

Look at the work

Twilight at the foot of Montmartre

Two blue-gray paths meet in the foreground and lead to a row of trees. Three tiny walkers appear between the trunks, reduced to red and dark accents.

The sky is largely yellow, while the foreground is covered in blue. This unusual distribution of colors reflects the transition from day to night without resorting to long shadows.

Square Saint-Pierre was still recent when Van Gogh painted it in May 1887. Today called Square Louise-Michel, it goes up to the Sacré-Cœur, whose basilica was then under construction.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum identifies the canvas by the inventory s0098V1962, the dimensions of 33 × 42 cm and the references F275/JH1278.

01

A yellow sky for the evening

Instead of gradually darkening the sky, Van Gogh uses a bright yellow and places the blues in the aisles; this inversion makes the uncertain time feel.

02

Trees still young

Their modest size and separate crowns reflect the park's recent development, ahead of the abundant vegetation visible today.

03

Three figures reduced to the essentials

Walkers are painted with just a few touches. Their presence gives the scale of the square and enlivens the center line without distracting from the landscape.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The museum notice precisely links the Parisian landscape to the urban history of Montmartre and the construction of the Sacré-Cœur.

Topography

At the foot of the Sacred Heart

The square extends on the slope of Montmartre; today it bears the name Louise Michel.

Era

A basilica still under construction

In 1887, the Sacred Heart was not completed. Van Gogh chose to frame the park and its young trees rather than the monument.

Color

Yellow at the top, blue at the bottom

This voluntary chromatic organization makes it possible to suggest the sunset with great economy of detail.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must respect the cold blues of the paths, the streaked yellow sky and the smallness of the three walkers, without making the trees too dark.

  • The two blue paths in the foreground
  • The pale yellow sky
  • Young trees with separate crowns
  • The three red and dark silhouettes
  • The thin green line of the lawn
