A large signaling disk rises in the center of the canvas, almost as imposing as a dark star. A second signal, higher and smaller, stands on the right. Behind them, locomotives, platforms and buildings disappear under swirls of white, blue and pink steam. Monet radicalizes the railway motif to the point of making signals the only fully stable objects in a moving atmosphere.

Two dark discs resist the dissolution of the station

The main signal starts from the bottom edge and places its black green disk almost exactly in the center. Its stem, base and outline remain legible despite smoke passing through. On the right, a second signal bears a small red mark and dominates an employee wearing a cap.

All around, the station is rebuilt in fragments: a blue-gray facade on the left, a few chimneys, ocher rails and several barely formed silhouettes. The plumes wind in clear curves and cross the sky, so that the machines become less visible than the traces of their activity.

Signals fix space; the steam immediately undoes the distances, the volumes and up to the border between the station and the sky.

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

A framing dominated by a functional object

The central disc cuts the depth and hides part of the scene. This bold choice refuses the traditional panoramic view and places the viewer in contact with railway equipment.

A hierarchy created by circles

The large central signal, the small disk on the right and other more distant round shapes respond to each other. Their decrease measures space even as rails and buildings become indistinct.

Scrolls drawn like lines

Steam isn't just a fuzzy mass. Several white, pink or pale yellow outlines draw visible loops that give the painting its energy.

Central signal is not uniform black

Its disc mixes very dark green, blue gray and brown. These variations keep it in the atmosphere while retaining its graphic strength.

A vapor bordered with pink and yellow

Large light curls are echoed by fine warm accents. They must remain clear without becoming decorative contours separated from the background.

Matter03

Rails suggested by a few directions

Ocher, brown and blue-green build the ground in broken lines. Their orientation is enough to guide the eye towards the hidden locomotives.

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This oil on canvas measuring 65.5 × 81.5 cm, painted in 1877, is kept in Hanover under the PNM 941 inventory and classified Wildenstein 448.

Series01

One of twelve views from the station

The Landesmuseum notice places the painting in the group dedicated to Saint-Lazare. Seven works from this campaign were shown at the third impressionist exhibition in 1877.

The most radical version around signals

The museum highlights the very advanced dissolution of objects in this view. The dark signal placed in the center becomes the main counterpoint to smoke and the sky.

Provenance03

By Gustave Caillebotte in Hanover

The painting first belonged to Gustave Caillebotte. After several transmissions and market appearances, Pelikan AG offered it to the Landesmuseum Hannover in 1979.
