A monumental millstone occupies almost the entire right half, bordered in an incandescent red while the sky and the field are charged with yellow at sunset. This oil on canvas measuring 73.3 × 92.7 cm, signed Claude Monet 91, is kept at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston under number 25.112.

Look at the work

The backlight enlarges the grinding wheel to the edge of the frame

The millstone is cut to the right and almost exceeds the top of the canvas. Its volume advances strongly, while the houses, trees and relief on the left are reduced to a distant frieze. This contrast in scale gives the pattern an almost architectural presence.

The sun is not directly represented: its presence can be read in the yellow sky, the orange-red border which goes around the millstone and the pink covers of the field. The heart of the gerbier remains purple-brown, crossed by blue and red touches which avoid any opaque mass.

W1289 transforms an ordinary gerbier into a monumental silhouette thanks to the close framing and halo of the setting sun.

Unlike versions where several grinding wheels fit into the field, W1289 approaches the pattern until it is cut. The viewer first feels its mass before returning to the landscape of Giverny.

Backlight darkens the visible side but lights up its edges. The red of the outline must remain mixed with brown and purple, without becoming a continuous decorative feature.
