À propos de l’œuvre

Navires en réparation, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Three ships and their reflections in the port of Le Havre · National Galleries of Scotland

Boats in a W260 porthand painted reproduction

Three large boats occupy almost the entire height of the painting. The central ship presents its stern to the viewer, surrounded by scaffolding where small blue figures work; the masts and ropes cut out the gray sky. In 1873, Monet tightened the port of Le Havre around hulls, repairs and their broken reflections.

Look at the work

The hulls become a vertical architecture in the middle of the reflections

The black and red stern of the central boat constitutes the strongest axis. Two lighter ships frame it, slightly turned, while yards and ropes multiply the diagonals in the sky. Workers in blue, installed on a floating platform, give concrete measure to these imposing masses.

The horizon line is placed quite high, leaving the foreground in the water. The hulls extend into gray, brown and black columns, immediately cut by short horizontal touches. A few ochres and reds warm up this deliberately sober port range.

Monet does not describe a panoramic view of the port: he approaches the ships until he makes hulls, masts and reflections the entire subject.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A vertical format suitable for masts and rigging

The height of the canvas accompanies the climb of the ropes. The central ship serves as the main column, while the side boats prevent the composition from becoming perfectly symmetrical.

02

Human work appears without strong narration

The museum notice identifies repairs to the stern of the central building. The workers and their platform are tiny, but their bright blue catches the eye and specifies the use of the port.

03

The reflections dissolve the weight of the boats

Under each shell, Monet first stretches the colors vertically then passes through them with small light wrinkles. This network transforms solid volumes into a mobile and luminous surface.

Read this specific version

The visual corresponds to Boats in Harbor, or Boats in a Port, painted in 1873, inventory NG 2423 of the National Galleries of Scotland and catalog Wildenstein 260. The unique WebP measures 600 × 795 px, maximum definition of the institutional public file, without enlargement artificial.

Composition01

The central stern must remain the dominant mass

Its blacks, red browns and light borders structure the painting. The structural details are legible, but they must not become sharper than workers or water.

Color02

The gray sky contains warm and cold shades

Pale blues, creams and purplish grays pass behind the masts. This diversity separates the ropes without producing a uniform bottom.

Matter03

Water alternates verticality and small breaks

The large trails under the hulls give depth; horizontal touches render surface wrinkles. Their balance is essential to the vibration of the foreground.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1873, this oil on canvas measures 71.2 × 54 cm. It is kept at the National Galleries of Scotland under the inventory NG 2423 and bears the number Wildenstein 260.

Probable location01

The port of Le Havre

The National Gallery of Scotland connects the stage to Le Havre. Monet knows this Norman port intimately, where he grew up and where he returns regularly to paint ships, quays and atmospheric effects.

Subject02

The central building is under repair

The stern facing us is surrounded by a platform. The small silhouettes dressed in blue signal the workers, giving the maritime landscape a modern working dimension.

Provenance03

Lord Amulree's legacy in 1984

The work entered the Scottish national collections thanks to the bequest of Basil William Sholto Mackenzie, second Baron Amulree. It is registered under number NG 2423.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Keep the central stern dark and monumental.
  • Maintain the irregular fineness of masts and ropes.
  • Make blue workers visible without enlarging them.
  • Break the reflections with short horizontal touches.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This vertical navy is suitable for a contemporary office, entrance or living room. A black, patinated steel or smoked oak frame accompanies the rigging; a pearl gray, slate blue or warm white wall highlights the reflections.
