From a high viewpoint, Monet watches the cliffs advance into the English Channel east of Pourville. The blue sea occupies the entire left part and narrows towards a very high horizon. To the right and in the foreground, the chalky slopes become a network of roses, ochres and greens placed in free touches.
Look at the work
The promontory in the foreground starts from the bottom and leads to a succession of more distant cliffs. Their curves do not follow a precise geological design: they are shaped by color changes, blue-gray shadows and orange accents.
The sea forms a vast cold breath. Small white sails appear there as tiny signs and give the scale of the site. On the horizon, the blue cools and joins a milky sky, without dark breaks.
Monet contrasts the calm expanse of the sea with the eventful construction of cliffs, where each change of light becomes a color.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The absence of a beach visible in the foreground accentuates the height. The gaze passes directly above the slopes and reaches the sea. This framing transforms the coast into a succession of oblique planes rather than a frontal panorama.
The cliffs are not white. They mix cream, pink, yellow, ocher and some greens. Their warmth advances visually, while the blues of the sea recede and give depth.
Oblique gestures follow the slopes, then become more horizontal on the water and the sky. The direction of the brush thus contributes to the topography. It must remain present in the reproduction rather than being melted into regular flat areas.

The only known open access document measures 970 × 600 px. It has been kept at its native definition and encoded in real WebP, without artificial enlargement or excessive accentuation.
The projections and hollows lead alternately to the right and to the center. This irregular progression gives distance to a canvas which nevertheless uses few details and a very simple horizon.
The blue of the English Channel is sustained but not uniform. The cliffs balance it with warm, clear passages. A few muted greens suggest vegetation without forming a continuous carpet.
Boats are indicated by small, clear markings. Their size and location matter more than their detail. Enlarging or surrounding them would break the scale and distract from the landscape.
Documented benchmarks
These landmarks concern precisely the Cliffs east of Pourville listed as Wildenstein 1431.
Monet painted this oil on canvas in 1896 on the Normandy coast. Its horizontal format and its number W1431 distinguish it from the views of Pourville taken during previous stays.
The framing shows the succession of cliffs towards Dieppe from a high point. Monet already knows this sector, which he had worked on for a long time in the 1880s, but here he renews the pattern with a freer color.
The work belonged to the collection of the Museu da Chacara do Céu in Rio de Janeiro. It was stolen from the museum in 2006 along with other paintings and its current location remains unknown.
