The Rocks of Belle-Île W1107hand painted reproduction

In Port-Domois, high pink and yellow cliffs enclose a cove of green and blue water where the foam disperses into white touches. The gaze plunges from two dark slopes in the foreground towards the Guibel rock, lit in the center of the composition. Signed and dated Claude Monet 86, this oil on canvas measuring 65.6 × 81.5 cm is kept at the Museum of Fine Arts in Reims under number 907.19.191 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1107.

Look at the work

The Guibel rock and the Port-Domois cove seen from the edge of the void

Two cliffs cut by the lower corners frame the water like the walls of a funnel. In the center, the Guibel rock receives light; behind it, a long cliff almost completely closes the horizon and gives the site its monumental character.

The sea alternates dark blue, turquoise and emerald green, streaked with white foam. The rocks bring together yellow, pink, red, mauve and green; large purple shadows hollow out their walls and reinforce the shine of the areas in the sun.

Monet constructs less of a panoramic view than an immersion: the viewer is placed above the cove, caught between the slopes of the foreground and the luminous walls of Port-Domois.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A plunging framing with no real escape

The top of the painting is closed by the cliff and the narrow strip of sky. The gaze therefore descends towards the water then rises through the rock walls, in a circular movement.

02

The Guibel rock as a luminous pivot

The central mass separates two water passages and carries the clearest accents. Its position organizes depth without resorting to linear perspective.

03

Extensive supplements at high intensity

The museum highlights the oppositions of reds, pinks and greens in the foreground, then yellows, mauves, blues and purples in the cliffs. Color directly builds light.

Composition01

Preserve the Guibel rock in the center of the cove

It is the major landmark of W1107 and must remain distinct from the large cliff at the bottom, while sharing its light range.

Color02

Preserve dark slopes in both corners

They establish the plunging viewpoint and frame the sea. Lightening them excessively would reduce the depth and shine of the cliffs.

Matter03

Keep the waves green, blue and white

Water is never a uniform sheet. Variations in direction and thickness of the key must maintain the struggle between swell, foam and reflections.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Reims Museum of Fine Arts documents Les Rochers de Belle-Ile, oil on canvas signed and dated 1886, 65.6 × 81.5 cm, inventory 907.19.191 and Wildenstein catalog 1107.

Location01

The Guibel rock on the wild coast of Port-Domois

The museum notice identifies this rock mass and locates the motif between Port-Domois, Roche percée and Pointe du Talut. Monet paints the coast from a steep viewpoint.

Campaign02

Thirty-nine paintings created in Belle-Île

During the fall of 1886, Monet stubbornly worked in front of the cliffs despite difficult access and changes in weather. This campaign renews his way of painting the sea and the rock.

Collection03

Henry Vasnier's legacy at the Reims museum

After a visit to the Durand-Ruel gallery and the collection of Louis Guyotin, the painting belonged to Henry Vasnier. His legacy brought it to the museum in 1907 under number 907.19.191.

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1107 version from the Reims museum
  • The Guibel rock lit in the center
  • The green and blue cove seen from a dive
  • The pink, yellow and purple cliffs of Port-Domois
