Claude Monet · Belle-Île · 1886 · W1100
Seen from above, an almost white sea submerges an archipelago of purple and black rocks on the wild coast of Belle-Île. Dark points appear in the foreground, then lower masses disappear in the surf to the horizon placed very high. Painted in 1886, this oil on canvas measuring 65.5 × 81.5 cm is kept at the Musée d'Orsay under number RF 2777 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1100.

Look at the work
Two triangular needles dominate the foreground, surrounded by wave-bleached water. Behind them, a large striated rock extends horizontally, then a succession of islets closes the upper part. The sky only occupies a narrow strip.
The rocks combine purple, midnight blue, brown and dark green; the sea mixes white, gray, blue and green. The short touches, sometimes vertical, sometimes curved, describe the foam without fixing the outline of the waves.
The horizontal format widens the conflict between the rocks and the sea: each point becomes an obstacle around which the foam changes direction.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The Musée d'Orsay specifies that Monet painted five views of these islets and that W1100 is the only one in landscape format, offering a wider field to the movement of the sea.
This height reduces the sky and gives the impression that the viewer is directly overlooking the surf. The composition borrows this audacity from the Japanese prints admired by Monet.
Monet uses wide, flat or rounded touches, different from his Norman seascapes. The comma shapes make the water powerful but pictorially controlled.
Reference image
A single exact image of W1100 is used throughout the sheet and as the sole media for the product. The real WebP measures 1024 × 840 px and retains the native definition available without artificial enlargement.
They must remain strongly cut but crossed with blue, purple and white. Uniform black would cause them to lose their material.
The sea must occupy almost the entire surface in order to maintain the dizzying viewpoint of W1100.
The whites connect the different rocks and indicate the currents. They should not become a flat surface without directions.
Documented benchmarks
The Musée d'Orsay documents The Rocks of Belle-Île, the Wild Coast, oil on canvas from 1886, 65.5 × 81.5 cm, inventory RF 2777 and catalog Wildenstein 1100.
He stayed on the island from September 12 to November 25, 1886. Cliffs and weather changes forced him to adapt his touch to a sea that he considered very different from the English Channel.
Probably offered by Monet to Gustave Caillebotte, the painting entered the national collections with the legacy accepted in 1896 and was assigned to the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.
W1100 belongs to this tight group. Its horizontal format allows you to show more rocks and multiply the directions of the surf.
