À propos de l’œuvre
Chemin à travers un champ de saules, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · April 1888 · Arles
Path through a field of willows, F407Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A brown path cuts through crops and leads to a white house topped with red. Two tadpole willows, a dark cypress and a few flowering trees structure this small view of Arles under a bright blue sky.
Look at the work
A narrow path transforms the field into a deep, lively space
The path starts from the lower edge, narrows in the middle of the plots then reaches the white house. On the left, the clear furrows extend almost horizontally; on the right, the green grass and the two cut trunks form a denser mass.
The vertical cypress acts as a landmark in the distance. The house, the pink trees and the thin blue stripe of the horizon catch the eye after the rapid course of the path, while the red and orange touches warm the land.
Path through a field of willows is an oil on canvas of 31.5 × 38.5 cm painted in Arles in April 1888. Referenced F407/JH1402, the work is kept in a private collection in Switzerland.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Despite its small format, Van Gogh constructs a very firm perspective here. A technical study from the Van Gogh Museum Journal indicates that he used a transfer plot to convey the contours of a preparatory drawing for this painting.
The path is the framework of the entire composition
Its two edges converge brightly towards the house. Brown, yellow and black brushstrokes accentuate its direction without transforming the path into a regular line.
Tadpole willows impose an irregular rhythm
Their massive trunks and trimmed crowns stand near the path. Their rough silhouette contrasts with the finer, lighter fruit trees in the background.
Each plot has its own writing
The pale furrows on the left, the vertical grass on the right and the green bands bordering the path are treated with differently oriented keys.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
References F407/JH1402 identify this small canvas from Arles. Its format, its Swiss provenance and the documented use of contour transfer distinguish it from other willow landscapes painted by Van Gogh.
A preparatory drawing transferred to the canvas
Comparative examination of the contours showed that Van Gogh used a trace to transfer a drawing into painting, a practice he occasionally uses in Arles.
Willows led like tadpoles
These regularly pruned trees produce thick trunks ending in a gnarled head. Van Gogh makes them powerful vertical markers at the side of the path.
A composition concentrated in 31.5 × 38.5 cm
The canvas is significantly smaller than many landscapes in Arles. The depth is therefore based on a few very readable signs: path, house, cypress and horizon.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must respect the strong shortcut of the path, the two tadpole willows, the white house with the red roof, the dark cypress and the precise alternation of yellow and green lands.
- The brown path which starts from the foreground
- The two tadpole willows on the right
- The white house with the red roof
- Black cypress near horizon
- Pink fruit trees under the blue sky
