Look at the work

The rising tide makes the coast a clash between water, rock and wind

The sea occupies almost the entire lower half and its oblique waves push towards the cliff. The dark promontory advances from the right; above, the small white construction appears fragile facing the immensity of the sky.

Blue green, turquoise, white and purple build the water into nervous touches. The cliff combines brown, green and mauve, while the bluish gray clouds open in places to a lighter light.

The high viewpoint brings the wave closer to the viewer and cuts the cliff on the right: the coast seems less described than physically experienced.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A deliberately unstable composition

The wave lines, steep cliff edge and clouds follow different directions. Their tension restores the wind and the thrust of the tide.

02

The building as a measure of erosion

The old customs house, now disappeared with the retreat of the cliff, gives a precarious human presence at the top of the promontory.

03

Modern framing

The rib is abruptly interrupted by the right edge and the viewer looks from a high point. This cut moves the canvas away from a conventional panoramic view.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W740 is used. The real WebP measures 1,536 × 1,240 px and comes from the Brooklyn Museum's reference visual, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Maintain the irregular rhythm of the waves

White ridges do not form uniform bands. Their interruptions and changes in angle make the sea mobile.

Color02

Preserve the little white house

It must remain readable without being enlarged or detailed. Its modesty reinforces the height of the cliff and the strength of the landscape.

Matter03

Maintain the blue greens of the water

The sea should not become a homogeneous blue. Turquoise, purple, gray and white simultaneously reflect depth, foam and reflections.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Brooklyn Museum documents Rising Tide in Pourville, oil on canvas from 1882, 66 × 81.3 cm, signed and dated lower right, inventory 41.1260 and Wildenstein 740.

Pattern01

The old customs post on the edge of the cliff

The Brooklyn Museum specifies that this building has since disappeared with the erosion of the promontory, which today gives the painting additional documentary value.

Method02

Several canvases worked over the conditions

In Pourville, Monet had his equipment transported and moved from one pattern to another depending on the tide, light and wind, in order to follow rapidly changing effects.

Collection03

Gift of Mrs. Horace O. Havemeyer

The work enters the Brooklyn Museum with the Havemeyer collection and has inventory number 41.1260.
