À propos de l’œuvre

Chaumes de Cordeville, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh June 1890 · Cordeville, Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Chaumes de Cordeville in Auvers-sur-OiseReproduction of oil painting on canvas

A large light cottage extends under a blue sky covered with spiral clouds. Roofs, trees and paths seem to be driven by the same movement: Van Gogh transforms the hamlet of Cordeville into a landscape where all shape curves and rises.

Look at the work

The cottage and the sky carried away by the same movement

The main house occupies the center right. Its long green roof descends towards two light chimneys and a white facade with blue-black openings. On the left, fences and stepped walls lead to other roofs partially hidden by trees.

The foliage forms large dark waves behind the buildings. Above, white clouds wrap around a deep blue sky. The clear path in the foreground also describes a curve and connects the houses to the general movement.

No element is still: the stubble undulates, the trees twist, the clouds turn and the path unfolds like a wave.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The work RF 1954 14 can be recognized by its large central cottage, its two fireplaces, the succession of fences and the blue sky animated by white arabesques.

01

A unit of movement

The directions of the roof, hedges and clouds respond to each other. The Musée d'Orsay describes this transformation of a peaceful hamlet into a landscape subjected to almost telluric energy.

02

Furrows in matter

The paint is applied in thick impasto, sometimes hollowed out like real furrows. The reproduction must retain these differences in relief and direction.

03

A harmony of blues and greens

Despite the hustle and bustle of the drawing, the range remains concentrated around blue, gray green and white. The rare yellows are mainly used to light paths and stone.

  • Dark trees forming a wave behind houses
  • White clouds spiral across the deep blue sky
  • The fences, low walls and curved paths in the foreground
