The blue of the sea confronts the warm yellows of the shore

The horizon is placed high, leaving the sea to occupy the heart of the composition. In the foreground, a curved cove enters from the left and meets a very clear rocky tongue. This movement opposes the horizontal swell to the diagonals of the seaside.

The sea changes from turquoise blue to ultramarine blue, then to purple in the hollows. The rocks combine lemon yellow, ocher, pink, green and brown, with small dark touches which indicate the reliefs. The sky, lighter, creates distance through its relative uniformity.

The "Big Blue" is not a flat area: each strip of water changes temperature, density and rhythm as it approaches the shore.

The rocky point advances from the right towards the center, while the small cove on the left recedes. Their interlocking gives a very readable depth without resorting to architecture.

Between January and the end of April 1888, Monet produced thirty-nine paintings on the Côte d'Azur. The maritime pattern allows it to measure brighter light and sharper colors than in the north of France.
