A clear road divides in the middle of an exuberant Mediterranean garden. Palm trees, agaves, flowering bushes and pink-red massifs almost hide the villas; behind them, the Maritime Alps unfold in mauves and blues under a luminous sky. Signed and dated "84 Claude Monet", this oil on canvas measuring 66 × 81.5 cm is kept in the Museum Barberini under the number MB-Mon-14. It corresponds to Wildenstein 855.

Look at the work

The famous Strada Romana becomes a garden without walkers where architecture fades in front of the plants and the light of the South

The road enters from the lower left corner, goes around a central massif then branches to the right. It does not lead directly to the villas: the vegetation interrupts the perspectives and multiplies the passages. Casa Rossa appears in the distance on the left, while a fragment of Villa Goffin is cut by the right edge.

The central palm, blue-green agaves and red bushes overlap without a clear horizon line. In the background, the pink and purple mountains remain visible between the foliage, then unite with the sky in very light blues. The afternoon light is thus the real link between the shots.

The Museum Barberini points out that the deserted view seems chosen at random: Monet avoids the touristy picturesqueness and makes the light and atmosphere of an early southern afternoon his real subject.

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

The path organizes a very dense composition

Its two light branches separate the beds and offer breaks in the middle of the foliage. Their curve prevents vegetation from becoming a uniform surface.

The palm tree dominates without being centered

Its dark trunk and light crown are placed slightly to the right. It gives the scale of the almost hidden villas and connects the garden to the big blue sky.

Roses and blues reflect the light of the South

Mountains, flowers and certain facades share these colors. They circulate between foreground and distance, creating the "palette of diamonds and precious stones" mentioned by Monet in his letters.

The clear bifurcation is essential to depth. Hiding it under the flowers or straightening it would destroy the winding route between the different massifs.

Keep villas partially concealed

Architecture should not become the main subject. Only a few walls, roofs and columns appear among the plants, in accordance with the choice described by the museum.

Matter03

Maintain cold colors in vegetation

Greens contain turquoise, blue and purple, especially in agaves and shadows. These cooled passages bring out the pink and orange flowers.

Three months on the Riviera in early 1884

Bordighera constitutes Monet's first long Mediterranean excursion. Accustomed to Norman tones, he must adapt his palette to the luminous intensity of the South.

Group02

One of three views of the Strada Romana

W855 was painted on site, like the Santa Barbara version. Another similar composition was taken up in Giverny to be offered to Berthe Morisot and today belongs to the Musée d'Orsay.

The dated signature is placed near the path and the flowers. The painting was probably purchased directly from the artist by Durand-Ruel in June 1884.
