À propos de l’œuvre

Chaumières sur une colline, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · Around July 26, 1890 · Cordeville, Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Farms near AuversReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Thatched farms fit together at the foot of a field-covered hill. Van Gogh uses the panoramic format to tilt the diagonals of the houses towards the valley and unite architecture, vegetation and relief.

Look at the work

The roofs of Cordeville descend towards the valley

The houses occupy the entire central strip. Their gables, chimneys and large thatched roofs overlap without regular alignment. A first diagonal plunges towards the center, while a second goes up to the right and joins the fields of the hill.

In the foreground, grasses and fences are indicated by rapid lines. Behind the farms, the green-yellow plots go up almost to the upper edge. The sky remains a thin, poorly worked strip, which accentuates the compact character of the village.

Van Gogh does not separate farms from the landscape: the slopes of the roofs extend those of the fields and give the whole a common movement.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The L711 canvas can be recognized by its double square format, its very high horizon and the tight group of Cordeville trusses.

01

Two crossed diagonals

The opposing alignments of the cottages dig and then close the valley. This geometry organizes a deliberately cluttered scene.

02

Almost green roofs

The long brown, green and purple touches of the stubble take on the rhythm of the fields. The buildings thus seem to belong to the relief.

03

A surface left open

The National Gallery reports that the painting appears unfinished, particularly in the sky and near the horizon. These lighter areas must remain visible in faithful reproduction.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must respect the panoramic format, the interlocking diagonals of the roofs and the deliberately less covered areas, without inventing missing details.

  • The exact tangle of gables, chimneys and cottages
  • The two large diagonals which lead towards the valley
  • The yellow greens of the fields on the hill
  • Light areas of the sky and horizon remained open
