Claude Monet · Rouen industrial in 1872 · Musée d'Orsay

Robec Creek W206hand painted reproduction

Fireplaces, smoke, workshops, footbridge and houses line Robec in Rouen. Monet places industry at the heart of the landscape: the buildings draw a firm perspective, but smoke and clouds cross the sky in colorful masses that connect the city to the atmosphere.

Look at the work

An industrial stream under a moving sky

On the left, the long workshop wall leads to a footbridge and buildings lower down. A series of chimneys rises behind the roofs; some remain clear, others extend into brown, gray and white plumes which occupy the center of the sky.

On the right, a stone house and its red roof close the foreground. Two figures walk near a tree placed in the middle of the perspective. The Robec's bed, paths and walls converge towards them, giving depth to a scene constructed in oblique planes.

Monet does not separate human activity from light: factory fumes become atmospheric forms in the same way as clouds.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A perspective between two walls

The side buildings frame the central passage. The walkway marks an intermediate stage, while the tree and silhouettes draw the eye towards the background.

02

Chimneys as a vertical rhythm

Their irregular succession responds to the trunk of the tree and the gables. They structure the sky without forming a uniform industrial line.

03

Smoke and clouds in the same palette

Purplish browns, cream grays and warm whites overlap with blue. The plumes remain readable while gradually blending into the air.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The reference corresponds precisely to the canvas RF 1937 43, W206. Its definition allows us to observe the chimneys, the walkway, the two figures and the variations of material in the large plumes of smoke.

Composition01

Very low framing

The upper half is given to the sky and the smoke, which gives as much importance to the atmosphere as to the buildings.

Color02

Lands lit by blue

Walls, floors and roofs combine ochres, pinks, purples and grays; the blue of the sky circulates discreetly into the shadows.

Matter03

Constructed but not drawn shapes

Facades and fireplaces are laid in flat areas and superimposed touches, without continuous black contours.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Musée d'Orsay documents this Rouen view from 1872 under number RF 1937 43; the Wildenstein catalog raisonné classifies it under number 206.

Location01

Le Robec in Rouen

This small stream crosses an area long occupied by mills, dye works and workshops; Monet shows its industrial density here.

Provenance02

Durand-Ruel then Antonin Personnaz

Durand-Ruel probably acquired the work from Monet in November 1872. It then passed into the collection of the photographer Antonin Personnaz.

Collection03

Legacy Antonin Personnaz, 1937

The legacy brings oil on canvas measuring 50 × 65 cm into the national collections, today assigned to the Musée d'Orsay.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the perspective of the stream, walls and footbridge without stiffening the architecture.
  • Differentiate each fireplace by its height, color and the panache it produces.
  • Keep both figures small but legible near the central tree.
  • Bring smoke and clouds together through colored transitions, not through uniform blur.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

The warm earths, turquoise blue and purple smoke give this industrial view a singular presence. It is suitable for a contemporary office, library or living room; a walnut, matte black or patinated bronze frame highlights its construction.
