À propos de l’œuvre

La rue de la Bavolle à Honfleur, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · A street in Honfleur in the early afternoon sun · Kunsthalle Mannheim

Rue de la Bavolle in Honfleur W34hand painted reproduction

A narrow street in Honfleur descends between old houses, shops and a few passers-by. The sun brightly illuminates the ocher facades on the right while the entire left side remains plunged into cold shadow. At twenty-four, Monet was already building his painting around a specific luminous phenomenon rather than a simple picturesque description.

Look at the work

A shadow border cuts the street and reveals each facade differently

The houses on the left form a dark wall, made of wood, stone and barely lit windows. On the right, the yellow storefronts, shutters and roofs receive a clear light. The boundary between these two areas passes through the central figures and becomes the real subject of the painting.

In the foreground, a woman, a boy and a small cart give the scale of the street. Other silhouettes are distributed in front of the shops then diminish towards the back. The sequence of roofs, signs and facades leads the eye to the light blue opening of the sky.

Long before the impressionist series, Monet observed here how the same street changes material and color when it suddenly goes from full sun to shade.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A perspective narrowed by two rows of houses

The facades converge towards a point placed low and slightly to the left of the center. The roof overhangs and signs interrupt this regular perspective and preserve the lively character of the street.

02

A shadow that also crosses the characters

The museum points out that the central boy receives the sun on his upper body while his legs remain in the shadows. This very concrete sharing gives the light an almost physical presence.

03

A bill that is still compact but already attentive at the moment

The walls, paving stones and figures are more solidly modeled than in the impressionist works of the 1870s. However, the time and direction of the sun already determine the entire vision.

Read this specific version

The visual corresponds to the version of La Rue de la Bavolle in Honfleur kept at the Kunsthalle Mannheim, acquired in 1911 and cataloged Wildenstein 34. The file is a real WebP of 1,025 × 946 px.

Composition01

The boundary between sun and shadow must remain clear

She runs diagonally down the street and touches the characters in the center. If it becomes blurry or moves, the precise time observed by Monet disappears.

Color02

The dark facades retain their details

Windows, half-timbering and openings are read by small gaps of gray, green and brown. Blackening them evenly would remove the depth on the left side.

Matter03

Bright ochres are never a flat area

Yellows, browns and oranges change on each wall, under each cornice and around the signs. These variations render the materials and recesses of the architecture.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1864, this oil on canvas measures 58 × 63 cm. It is kept at the Kunsthalle Mannheim, which acquired it in 1911, and listed as Wildenstein 34.

Light01

Early afternoon on a narrow street

The Kunsthalle Mannheim describes the houses on the right bathed in sunlight and the broad shadows coming from the left. Their meeting forms a very cut-out silhouette in the center of the road.

Series02

The same pattern observed at another time

Monet also painted this street in a version today at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Both paintings show that his interest in lighting variations predates his famous series by several decades.

Period03

A twenty-four year old Monet still close to realism

The material remains compact and the architectures are solidly described. The attention paid to the fleeting values of the sun, however, announces the research which will lead to impressionism.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the narrow perspective and the recesses of the roofs.
  • Maintain clear separation between the two light zones.
  • Keep characters small but readable.
  • Modulate dark facades without making them opaque.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This urban scene is suitable for an entrance, office or dining room. A walnut, weathered black or medium oak frame accompanies the houses; a gray blue, pale ocher or linen wall highlights the solar contrast.
