À propos de l’œuvre
Rue de Montmartre, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · April -May 1886 · Montmartre, Paris
Path to Montmartre, F232Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A sloping path crosses fences and climbs towards a grove of Montmartre. Four passers-by stretch into the depth: a boy descends to the foreground, a woman climbs and two figures meet higher up.
Look at the work
The slope, the fences and the passers-by transform a path into a living scene
The path starts very wide from the lower edge then quickly narrows. The side barriers accompany this escape, while the irregular steps underline the relief of the mound.
Dark trees close the left side and let a pink beige sky appear on the right. A few light flowers punctuate the vegetation and respond to the figures' headdresses.
Chemin à Montmartre F232/JH1113 is an oil on cardboard of 22.2 × 16.3 cm painted in Paris in April - May 1886. The Van Gogh Museum preserves it under the inventory s0092V1962.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
In this very small format, Van Gogh uses the perspective of the path and the decreasing size of the figures to render a steep slope and a deeply hollowed out space.
Palisades function as lines of flight
Their vertices converge towards the upper group and immediately lead the gaze into depth.
The four figures measure distance
The boy in the foreground is significantly taller than the silhouettes at the top, which accentuates the climb.
The forest and the sky share the vertical
An almost black green mass occupies the left; the lighter sky opens the right and prevents the path from appearing enclosed.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
F232/JH1113, the format of 22.2 × 16.3 cm, the cardboard support and the inventory s0092V1962 correct the overly general identification of "Rue de Montmartre".
A still semi-rural mound
In 1886, certain paths close to quarries and gardens retained palisades, trees and relief very far from the main Parisian boulevards.
A landscape of only twenty-two centimeters
Despite its small size, the painting combines several shots, four characters and a strong upward perspective.
A work of the Vincent van Gogh Foundation
The painting is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under number s0092V1962 and listed F232/JH1113.
