A vertical rhythm created by young poplars
The fine trunks follow one another irregularly, with a dense group on the right and two isolated trees on the left. They give momentum to a largely horizontal composition.

Claude Monet · plaine des Essarts · 1887 · W1136
Two young figures cross a dazzling meadow of poppies under a row of poplars. Germaine Hoschedé advances in the center, enveloped in brown and pink tones, while a son of Monet appears further to the left. Painted in 1887, this oil on canvas measuring 73 × 92 cm is kept at the Museum Barberini under the number MB-Mon-23 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1136.

Look at the work
The meadow occupies more than half of the canvas, covered with almost pure reds, yellows and greens. The two figures barely emerge from the flowers: Germaine places herself slightly to the right of the center, while the second, smaller character stands near the two thin poplars on the left.
A row of saplings rises on the right and cuts out the bluish-white sky. Their vertical trunks connect the meadow to the foliage, while a chain of purple hills gently closes the horizon. The light remains clear and without heavy shade.
Walkers do not dominate the scene: they belong to the same network of touches as flowers and trees, as if summer light absorbed any distinction between figure and landscape.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The fine trunks follow one another irregularly, with a dense group on the right and two isolated trees on the left. They give momentum to a largely horizontal composition.
Poppies do not form a uniform band. Their scattered accents cross the yellow and green meadow, leading the gaze to Germaine then towards the line of the hills.
The clothes reflect the browns, pinks, greens and blues of the landscape. Their deliberately summary design avoids any portrait effect and maintains the unity of the atmosphere.
Reference image
A single exact image of W1136 is used throughout the file and as the sole media for the product. The real WebP measures 2,500 × 1,985 px, converted from the official Museum Barberini image without artificial enlargement.
Its vertical silhouette dialogues with the trees and serves as a human landmark. However, it must remain absorbed by the touches of the field.
They balance the large tree group on the right and frame the second character. Their finesse is a distinctive element of W1136.
This discreet strip separates the meadow from the sky without closing the space. Too dark a color would weigh down the light light of the summer day.
Documented benchmarks
The Museum Barberini documents Under the Poplars, oil on canvas from 1887, 73 × 92 cm, signed and dated Claude Monet 87, inventory MB-Mon-23 and Wildenstein 1136.
Monet painted this meadow in the vicinity of Giverny. The abundantly flowered field and the young poplars allow him to simultaneously study the rhythm of the trunks and the brightness of the full sun.
The Museum Barberini identifies the young woman in the center as Germaine, daughter of Alice Hoschedé. The boy further to the left would be Jean or Michel Monet.
The museum indicates that W1136 and its composition close to Stuttgart were probably presented during the Monet-Rodin exhibition organized in Paris in 1889.
