Claude Monet · Camille and Jean in a meadow in Argenteuil · Alte Nationalgalerie

Summer W341hand painted reproduction

In a summer meadow, Camille Monet sits in the foreground under an umbrella, while young Jean appears further away in the light grass. Thin birches, poplars waved by the wind and distant blue hills share the same luminous air. Monet does not treat the figures as separate portraits: they become colorful presences in the middle of the landscape.

Look at the work

Figures, grass and trees share the same vibrant light

Camille sits slightly to the left, her light dress spread out in the grass and her dark parasol tilted towards her face. An umbrella or green fabric rests near her. In the distant center, Jean, dressed in light, is reduced to a few touches which are enough to measure the extent of the meadow.

The horizon line is low and leaves a vast blue-mauve sky covered with diffused light. The fine birches on the left and the leaning trees on the right are built by small green touches. In the meadow, yellows, gray blues, mauves and greens describe both the colored shadows and the grasses.

Camille and Jean have the same optical presence as the trees moved by the wind and the shadows in the grass: the real subject is the impression of a summer afternoon.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A meadow that occupies half of the canvas

The first open plan separates Camille from Jean and creates depth without path or architecture. Variations in key and temperature replace an explicit linear perspective.

02

Deliberately integrated figures

Camille's dress takes up the grays, blues and pinks of the atmosphere; Jean almost blends in with the light grass. Their presence remains identifiable but subordinate to the luminous unity of the landscape.

03

The wind rendered by the inclinations

The trees on the right lean in the same direction, while the leaves disperse in brief touches. This repetition gives an aerial movement without transforming the scene into a dramatic episode.

Read this specific version

The visual corresponds to Summer of 1874, inventory AI 1013 and Wildenstein number 341. The high definition digitization has been converted into a real WebP of 3,000 × 2,165 px without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Camille stays small in the meadow

Its silhouette should not be enlarged or detailed like a studio portrait. The dress is made up of colorful folds that mingle with the carpet of grass and its shadow.

Color02

The sky retains a dominant purple

The blues are softened by gray, pink and purple. A saturated azure would lose the slightly foggy heat that connects the sky to the distant ones.

Matter03

The trees are made of airy touches

The fine trunks remain visible between the leaves. Continuous green masses would weigh down the scene; voids and light touches are essential to suggest the wind.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1874, this oil on canvas measures 57 × 80 cm. It is kept at the Alte Nationalgalerie under the inventory AI 1013 and listed Wildenstein 341.

Models01

Camille Monet and their son Jean

The Alte Nationalgalerie notice identifies the seated woman as Camille and the distant child as Jean. Monet places them in the same network of light, grass and wind as the rest of the landscape.

Location02

A meadow near Argenteuil

During the summer of 1874, Monet worked in Argenteuil alongside Renoir and Manet. The commune and its countryside allowed him to associate family life with research carried out directly in front of the motif.

Reception03

Presented at the second impressionist exhibition

Summer was shown during the second impressionist exhibition in 1876. Émile Zola distinguished and celebrated this painting, which clearly summarized the search for a unified luminous impression.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Keeping Camille and Jean at their small scales in the landscape.
  • Preserve the colorful mauves and grays of the sky.
  • Tilt the trees without stiffening their trunks.
  • Vary the meadow by areas of light rather than isolated strands.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This bright meadow is suitable for a living room, bedroom or dining room. A light oak, off-white or gray green frame accompanies the atmosphere; a linen, pale lavender or pearl gray wall reveals the soft yellows of the meadow.
