An orange sun descends above Lavacourt and projects a column of red and yellow reflections into the Seine. The village is reduced to a blue-green silhouette in the mist; in the foreground, two dark banks frame the river, with large bare trees on the right. Signed and dated 1880, this monumental oil on canvas measuring 101.5 × 150 cm is kept at the Petit Palais under the number PPP439 and corresponds to Wildenstein 576.

Look at the work

The orange disc goes through an icy atmosphere and transforms the entire Seine

The sun is placed almost in the center, slightly above the village line. Its saturated color contrasts with the turquoise, blues and mauves that envelop the houses and the distant shore.

In the water, the light breaks into short orange, pink and yellow lines rather than a continuous column. The dark banks of the foreground curve towards this light area and lead the eye directly to the village of Lavacourt.

As in Impression, rising sun, a small hot disk is enough to reorganize a vast cold atmosphere; here, its reflection becomes the axis of the river in winter.

At 150 cm wide, the canvas gives a monumental scale to a silent scene. The long lines of the river and the village fully exploit this horizontal relationship.

The entire landscape remains blue, green and mauve, while the brightest orange is reserved for the sun and its reflections. This economy makes the light immediately intense.

Dark banks that frame the light

The left bush and the right wooded point form two close masses. Their asymmetry opens a corridor of water and prevents the central sun from freezing the composition.

The column of the sun is interrupted by turquoise and dark blue lines. This fragmentation renders the movement of water and the vibration of light.

Lavacourt faces Vétheuil on the other bank

Monet paints the village from the surroundings of his residence in Vétheuil. The panorama shows the Seine as a vast space between the two banks.

Winter02

Research carried out during the thaw of 1880

The Petit Palais notice indicates that Monet undertook around twenty paintings while observing the gradual transformation of the river at the end of winter.

Collection03

A donation from Edward Brandus in 1906

The painting enters the Museum of Fine Arts of the City of Paris under number PPP439 and is today exhibited at the Petit Palais.
