In the woods of Giverny W1131hand painted reproduction

Blanche Hoschedé paints standing in front of her easel while Suzanne, sitting in the grass under a straw hat, reads at her feet. The pink and gray trunks punctuate the Giverny woods; above the young women, the leaves fragment the sky into blue, green and white touches. This oil on canvas from 1887, measuring 91.44 × 97.79 cm, is kept in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art under the number M.46.3.4 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1131.

Look at the work

Painting and reading in the middle of a wood crossed by light

Suzanne occupies the lower left corner, her head lowered towards her book. Blanche, higher up, stands in the center in front of an easel seen in profile and carries a palette in her left hand. The vertical trunks frame the two figures and give a regular depth to the undergrowth.

Blanche's white and blue dress captures the light, while Suzanne's dark clothing blends more into the grass. The foliage is made of discontinuous touches of blue-green, emerald green, white and lilac. The soil alternates pink earth, bright grass and cold shadows.

Monet paints an artist painting: Blanche's easel becomes the axis of the composition, while Suzanne offers the calm counterpoint of reading.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Two complementary activities

Blanche's standing and Suzanne's sitting pose create a clear opposition between active concentration and rest. The gestures remain simple, without transforming the scene into an anecdotal story.

02

The easel as the central column

Inclined between the two sisters, it connects the foreground to the foliage and dialogues with the trunks. Her presence precisely signals Blanche's activity while organizing depth.

03

A figure painted like a landscape

The contours of the dresses are crossed by the same colors as the grass and trees. Monet integrates the characters into the air and light of the wood instead of detaching them like in a studio portrait.

Reference image

Read this specific version

A single exact image of W1131 is used throughout the file and as the sole media for the product. The real WebP measures 2,401 × 2,247 px, converted from the Google Art Project file associated with LACMA without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep Suzanne sitting on the left and Blanche standing

This arrangement identifies W1131 and distinguishes it from W1132, another version belonging to a private collection. The poses and scale of the figures must remain accurate.

Color02

Preserve Blanche's easel and palette

These accessories must be readable without becoming too drawn. They explain the scene while participating in the vertical network of trunks.

Matter03

Keep the light fragmented in the foliage

Whites, blues and greens are interspersed between the branches. A uniform canopy would lose the impression of a sky seen through the leaves.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

LACMA documents In the Woods at Giverny: Blanche Hoschedé at Her Easel with Suzanne Hoschedé Reading, oil on canvas from 1887, 91.44 × 97.79 cm, inventory M.46.3.4 and catalog Wildenstein 1131.

Models01

Blanche Hoschedé and her sister Suzanne

White paints standing in front of the easel; Suzanne sits and reads. The two young women are the daughters of Alice Hoschedé and belong to Monet's daily family circle in Giverny.

Version02

The LACMA canvas is Wildenstein 1131

The short title Suzanne reading and Blanche painting can also designate W1132, a different composition in private collection. The image here presents Giverny wood and corresponds precisely to W1131.

Collection03

The collection of George Gard De Sylva

The work belongs to Mr. and Mrs. George Gard De Sylva LACMA Collection. It is numbered M.46.3.4 and is now featured in the Resnick Pavilion.
