À propos de l’œuvre

Les Cyprès, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · End of June 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France

The Cypresses, F613Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Two immense cypresses rise like a dark flame in front of a blue sky crossed by pink clouds and a crescent moon. Van Gogh brings the trees together until their trunks, branches and foliage become a living monument.

Look at the work

Trees as vertical as an obelisk

The large central cypress almost touches the upper edge. Its narrower companion rises to the left; their green-black masses are covered with yellows, reds, blues and small curved touches which prevent the shadow from becoming uniform.

On the right, the crescent moon and spiral clouds balance the trees. Purple hills, clear bushes and a foreground of thick grass gradually bring the gaze back to the ground.

The painting opposes two forces: the vertical thrust of the cypresses and the round circulation of the sky. The tension between these movements gives monumentality to the landscape.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Metropolitan Museum of Art preserves Les Cyprès under number 49.30. The canvas measures 93.4 × 74 cm and bears F613/JH1746.

01

Dark is constructed by several colors

The tree appears almost black from a distance, but its surface combines greens, blues, browns, yellows and reds. This diversity restores the volume of the foliage without artificially lightening it.

02

The sky revolves around the silhouettes

The white, turquoise and pink curves go around the mass of the trees. They make the air visible and by contrast accentuate the vertical stability of the trunks.

03

Impasto follows each shape

The keys rise and wrap in the cypress, become circular in the clouds then undulate on the ground. The relief of the painting thus organizes the reading of the scene.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The F613/JH1746 Cypress trees were painted shortly after Van Gogh's arrival in Saint-Paul-de-Mausole. The Met keeps them under inventory 49.30.

Pattern

The cypress compared to an obelisk

Van Gogh found the tree beautiful in its lines and proportions, which he compared to those of an Egyptian obelisk. He sought to control his dark note in the southern sun.

Pair

Two close-up views in vertical format

This composition belongs to a pair of large cypress portraits. The other vertical view, F620, is kept at the Kroeller-Müller Museum in Otterlo.

Exposure

Presented at the Salon des Indépendants

Van Gogh chose the painting for the Salon des Indépendants of 1890 in Paris, a sign of the importance he attached to this research on cypress.
