Table de café avec absinthe, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · February -March 1887 · Paris

Coffee table with absinthe, F339Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A jug of water and a glass of absinthe occupy a white marble table near a café window. Outside, silhouettes, trees and roads are reduced to small light touches, like a Parisian boulevard seen between two sips.

Look at the work

Two stationary containers facing the rapid passage of the boulevard

The silver carafe is placed on the left and the greenish glass just to its right. Their bases are almost at the same level; the long window frames them like a stage, while the tray cut by the edge brutally brings the objects closer together.

Outside, the figures are tiny and faceless. The vertical window jambs, sidewalk line and tree gate provide enough structure to suggest the street without describing it in detail.

Coffee table with absinthe is an oil on canvas of 46.3 × 33.2 cm painted in Paris in February-March 1887. The work F339/JH1238 belongs to the Van Gogh Museum under the number s0186V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This small canvas belongs to Parisian experiences where Van Gogh lightens his palette and paints urban leisure activities. The subject remains still life, but the street visible behind the objects introduces time, passage and the atmosphere of the café.

01

The carafe is painted in reflections rather than outline

Blues, grays, whites and mauves overlap in the transparent glass. Its volume appears thanks to changes in value on the brown background of the window.

02

Absinthe concentrates the only acidic color

The yellow-green liquid immediately catches the eye. The pink edge of the glass and the purple foot prevent this shade from blending into the boulevard.

03

The window opens a second image

Beyond the table, silhouettes and trees make up a miniature urban scene. The gaze thus oscillates between nearby objects and outside life.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F339/JH1238 and inventory s0186V1962 identify the Van Gogh Museum canvas. Its vertical dimensions and the carafe placed in front of a bay distinguish it from the darker coffee scenes created in Arles.

Drink

Absinthe served with a jug of water

The device combines a small glass of liqueur and water intended to dilute it. Van Gogh describes less of a spectacular ritual than an ordinary moment of Parisian coffee.

Paris

The boulevard is part of still life

The window transforms objects into the foreground of an urban landscape. Passers-by and trees place the study in the modern Paris frequented by the artist.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the transparency of the carafe, the yellow-green liquid, the pink reflection of the glass, the light marble, the window jambs and the tiny silhouettes of the boulevard.

  • The large transparent carafe
  • The glass of yellow-green absinthe
  • The purple foot and the pink edge
  • The light marble table
  • Passers-by visible through the window
