Its smoke rises into the gray sky and mixes with it until the border between steam, clouds and mist becomes uncertain. Monet places the modern machine in the same network of colored variations as the trees, barriers and whites of the landscape.

Look at the work

The dark locomotive splits the white while its smoke invades the sky

The train enters from the left and directs its red and black side towards the spectator. The track runs along the lower edge, but the rails partially disappear under the snow. To the right, an irregular fence and a row of trees follow the depth of the platform.

The smoke forms a large gray-brown column which expands before being lost in the clouds. Travelers and employees become small silhouettes near the train. The two yellow headlights, the red of the locomotive and a few blue accents are enough to illuminate a range dominated by grays, whites and browns.

The machine does not break the landscape: its steam, colors and movement become another form of the winter atmosphere.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A slightly off-center front arrival

The locomotive advances near the left third, leaving the trees, fence and platform with ample escape space. This asymmetry gives momentum to the train without crushing the stage.

Smoke connects earth to sky

The chimney provides the darkest vertical, then the plume widens into touches of gray, purple and brown. Its open border allows the cloudy sky to gradually absorb it.

Three warm accents in a cold range

The frontal red and the two yellow headlights are tiny but essential. They give a visual center to the machine and by contrast reinforce the bluish whiteness of the snow.

The image corresponds to the 4017 inventory of the Marmottan Monet Museum and Wildenstein number 356. Its native definition of 1500 × 1128 px was retained during WebP encoding, without oversampling.

The train remains massive without becoming a black block

Blues, grays, browns and red highlights describe the boiler and wagons. These variations must distinguish volumes while retaining the dark weight of the machine.

Color02

Snow partially covers the rails

The metal lines appear, disappear then reappear in the white keys. A path drawn from end to end would weaken the feeling of accumulation and cold.

Matter03

The trees extend the rhythm of the quay

Their vertical trunks decrease with distance and their branches mingle with the sky. They balance the chimney without forming too regular a row.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1875, this oil on canvas measuring 59 × 78 cm is signed and dated Claude Monet 75 lower right. It is kept at the Marmottan Monet museum under inventory 4017 and classified Wildenstein 356.

Winter01

A modern exception among snowy landscapes

The museum links the painting to the suite made in Argenteuil during the winter of 1874 -1875. While most of the motifs are rural, the locomotive places speed, industry and the rail connection with Paris at the center.

Evolution02

A prelude to the views of Saint-Lazare station

Two years later, Monet devoted a series to the great Parisian station. Here his research on steam, smoke, metal structure and the dissolution of shapes in the air already appears.

Collection03

At Georges de Bellio's from 1876

The painting was sought after very early by impressionist amateurs. He then entered the Marmottan with a gift from Eugène and Victorine Donop de Monchy in 1940, descendants of Doctor de Bellio.
