Look at the work

The repetition of the capes gives its depth to the coast

The nearby promontory goes down to a narrow beach. Behind it, the successive cliffs become smaller and colder. The right half remains open to an almost empty sea.

The ochres and reds of the rock are tempered by purple. The water mixes light green, gray and blue, with long horizontal touches. The sky takes the same values and almost erases the separation of the horizon.

Calm does not mean stillness: subtle changes of green, gray and pink make the entire bay breathe.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A great opposition between cliff and sea

The dark mass on the left concentrates matter; the light expanse on the right lets the gaze circulate.

02

Capes that diminish towards the distance

Each coastline projection is smaller and less contrasted than the previous one, creating a precise atmospheric depth.

03

Some sails as units of measurement

The tiny boats give the scale of the bay and introduce vertical accents into the long touches of the water.

Reference image

Read this specific version

A single exact image of W650 is used throughout the listing and as the sole Shopify media. The real WebP measures 790 × 640 px and retains its native definition.

Composition01

Keep the red cliff at the left edge

It must keep its color breaks and its irregular profile.

Color02

Preserve the almost melted horizon

The sky and the sea approach each other in their bluish grays without becoming a single flat area.

Matter03

Keep small sails isolated

Their position is essential to the balance of the large marine surface.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Documentation from Temps calme, Fécamp identifies W650 as an oil on canvas from 1881, 60 × 73.5 cm, belonging to the Rudolf Staechelin collection.

Identification01

The motif is documented in Fécamp

The title Pourville has sometimes circulated for this image, but the catalog raisonné precisely links W650 to Fécamp.

Format02

A horizontal canvas built on depth

The ratio 60 × 73.5 cm gives enough breadth to the sea while maintaining the nearby cliff as the dominant mass.

Collection03

A painting of the whole Rudolf Staechelin

The painting has long been presented at the Kunstmuseum Basel with this private Swiss collection.
