Quiet weather, Fécamp W650hand painted reproduction

From the top of a cliff, the gaze runs along a succession of red capes into the distance. The pale green sea is almost still; a few tiny sails are enough to give the scale of the bay. Painted in 1881, this oil on canvas measuring 60 × 73.5 cm belongs to the Rudolf Staechelin collection and corresponds to Wildenstein 650, under the documented title Calm Time, Fécamp.

Look at the work

A steep coast borders a silent sea

The nearby cliff occupies the entire left edge and descends towards a narrow beach. The following capes repeat its shape, decreasing to the horizon. The large surface of water opens the composition to the right.

Ocher, red and purple-brown shape the chalk and earth of the cliff. The sea mixes sea green, gray, pale blue and pink. The sky takes on these tones with very little contrast, which reinforces the effect of calm.

The movement comes less from the waves than from the repetition of the cliffs: each cape pushes the gaze a little further along the coast.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A succession of caps as a measure of distance

The cliffs overlap from the foreground to the bottom. Their regular decrease gives a very clear depth without architectural perspective.

02

A sea almost without agitation

The horizontal keys are long and not very contrasting. A few lighter lines near the shore indicate only the faint surf.

03

Sails reduced to a few signs

Small light and dark boats punctuate the water. Their tiny scale amplifies the extent of the bay and the height of the viewpoint.

Read this specific version

A single exact image of W650 is used throughout the listing and as the sole Shopify media. The real WebP measures 1000 × 806 px and has not undergone any artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep the large cliff on the left

Its reds, ochres and purples must remain distinct to maintain the relief of the rock.

Color02

Preserve the pale green sea

It should become neither uniform blue nor white; its subtle nuances carry the effect of calm weather.

Matter03

Keep the sails tiny

These precise accents give scale and liven up the water without breaking the silence of the landscape.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The documentation for Temps calme, Fécamp identifies an oil on canvas from 1881, 60 × 73.5 cm, belonging to the Rudolf Staechelin collection and listed as Wildenstein 650.

Title01

A view of Fécamp, sometimes distributed under the name Pourville

The catalog raisonné and the image documentation precisely link W650 to Fécamp. The composition shows the coast observed from a high cliff.

Normandy02

A campaign on the coast in 1881

Monet paints the sea, capes and beaches in very different states of light. Here, the absence of storms allows us to study the light shades of the water.

Collection03

A work by the Rudolf Staechelin ensemble

The painting has long been presented at the Kunstmuseum Basel with the Staechelin collection; it remains today in this private collection.
