À propos de l’œuvre
Tisserand tourné vers la droite, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · February 1884 · Nuenen, Netherlands
Weaver facing right, F162Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Sitting in the opening of the loom, the weaver seems almost absorbed by the machine. The long roll of white fabric, the ocher crosspieces and the hanging ropes emerge from a workshop with very deep browns.
Look at the work
A craftsman enveloped by the mechanics of the trade
The weaver, facing right, is placed behind a succession of beams and threads. His hat, face and forearms remain visible in a narrow space, like an interior chamber fitted into the machine.
The light fabric advances horizontally towards the right edge and responds to the loom blades. On the floor, long red-brown and gray touches suggest the workshop boards and give seating to the whole.
Weaver facing right F162/JH457 is an oil on canvas mounted on panel of 36.6 × 45 cm, painted in Nuenen in February 1884. The work belongs to a private collection.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The small format concentrates a remarkable amount of information. Van Gogh builds the loom with very firm lines, but leaves the touches visible in the fabric, clothing and floor in order to maintain a feeling of work in progress.
The figure is taken from the structure
The uprights surround the weaver without hiding it. This interweaving shows the close relationship between human gesture and machine, rather than a simple portrait of an artisan.
The fabric leads the gaze
The large gray-white band crosses the right half. It indicates the function of the craft and creates the brightest area of an otherwise very dark interior.
The ground balances the black mass
The reddish and beige boards occupy the lower part. Their oblique rhythm visually widens the piece and contrasts with the horizontal weight of the loom.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The Christie's sales notice documents the support, dimensions, origin and precise social context of this F162/JH457 version.
An endangered craft
The rural weavers of Brabant then suffered competition from the mechanized industry. Van Gogh seeks to preserve the image of domestic know-how and old trades already threatened.
Seven oils in a few months
Christie's recalls that Van Gogh executed around seven paintings by weavers, as well as nearly twenty drawings and watercolors, before resuming the theme during the summer.
From C. Mouwen to HP Bremmer
The published provenance goes in particular through C. Mouwen Jr., the Oldenzeel gallery then the advisor and collector HP Bremmer, before several modern sales.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The reproduction must retain the tight framing, the profile of the weaver, the succession of wooden bars, the red ropes, the white fabric and the warm shades of the floor.
- The weaver seated under the upper beam
- Ropes and pulleys suspended from the loom
- The long gray-white fabric unrolled to the right
- The ocher sleepers which intersect in the center
- The red-brown touches of the floor
