Weaver in front of his loom with spinning wheel, F29Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A weaver works behind the massive frame of his loom, while a spinning wheel occupies the left of the workshop. The white light of the wall and the red shine of the fabric bring out the gestures of the craftsman in the middle of the dark woods.

Look at the work

The loom, the spinning wheel and the craftsman united in the same workshop

The loom forms a large horizontal construction that cuts almost the entire composition. The weaver appears in its central opening, hands close to the threads, while the spinning wheel stands out clearly to the left.

The floor is laid by long brown and gray touches which lead towards the machine. Between the black uprights, a strip of red and white fabric immediately catches the eye and gives a colorful pulsation to this work scene.

Painted in Nuenen in March 1884, this Weaver F29/JH471 is an oil on canvas measuring 62.5 × 84.4 cm. Entered the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in 1958, it bears the inventory number 58.356.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh makes a complex mechanism readable without erasing its bulk. The large uprights of the loom structure the space, then the red, white and green accents guide the eye to the weaver's face and hands.

01

The profession becomes the backbone of the painting

Its dark beams draw a frame within the frame. They separate the spinning wheel, the craftsman and the part while showing how much the machine physically occupies the domestic workshop.

02

The spinning wheel opens the foreground

Its large black wheel, seen at an angle, creates a rare circular shape in this composition dominated by verticals and horizontals. It also places another stage of thread work.

03

Red awakens the earthy range

The orange-red piece of fabric crosses browns and black greens. This small, bright area concentrates light and prevents the vast craft from merging with shadow.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The instructions from the Museum of Fine Arts and the catalogs raisonnés make it possible to distinguish this great weaver with spinning wheel from the numerous studies carried out by Van Gogh in Nuenen.

Series

The weavers of Nuenen

In early 1884, Van Gogh visited artisans working from home. He devoted several oils, drawings and watercolors to the subject, fascinated both by men and by the architecture of ancient trades.
