Head of a woman in a green hat, F74Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

An old peasant woman looks directly at the viewer under a dark green cap. His face is constructed of ocher, brown, orange and black by thick touches; around him, the headdress, shawl and background feature several greens which reinforce his frontal presence.

Look at the work

A rare frontal look in Nuenen's peasant studies

The face is placed slightly to the left of the center, but both eyes face us. The cap forms a dark arch above the forehead and descends on each side like a protective covering.

The nose is separated from the cheek by a clear shadow; a second line starts from the left corner of the mouth. These almost graphic accents bring wrinkles to life without smoothing out the irregularities of the model.

Head of a woman with a green hat F74/JH648 is an oil on canvas measuring 37.9 × 28.4 cm made in Nuenen between November 1884 and May 1885. It is inventoried KM 111,262.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh makes green a family of values rather than a single color. The background, headdress and shawl are distinguished by temperature and density, then serve as a setting for the warm face.

01

Wrinkles are shaped by matter

The keys follow the forehead, eyelids, cheeks and mouth. They hide neither age nor fatigue and give the portrait its tactile strength.

02

The shadows of the nose and mouth structure the expression

Two very clear dark lines interrupt the orange passages. They stabilize the features and prevent the face from dissolving in the touch.

03

The greens form several planes around the head

The background is grayer, the hat almost black and the shawl marked with olive lines. This progression creates depth without decoration or accessories.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The references F74/JH648, the dimensions of 37.9 × 28.4 cm and the number KM 111.262 distinguish this front head from the numerous studies of women from the same campaign.

Work

Van Gogh paints and draws heads tirelessly

At the end of 1884 and the beginning of 1885, he said he had already painted around thirty heads and had drawn as many. This repetition allows him to progress quickly.

Angle

Most models are seen in profile

This woman is an exception when looking straight ahead. Frontality makes facial asymmetries, wrinkles and shadows immediately noticeable.

Context

Religious authorities discourage certain models

Ecclesiastics criticize Van Gogh for his proximity to modest inhabitants and try to dissuade them from posing. He nevertheless continued his studies.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the direct gaze, the arch of the cap, the shadows cut near the nose and mouth, the ochres of the face and the multiple greens of the background and the shawl.

  • Both dark eyes turned towards the viewer
  • The luminous ocher band in the center of the forehead and nose
  • Sharp shadow on the left side of the nose
  • The black green headdress that envelops the head
  • The olive lines of the shawl at the bottom of the portrait
