Tête d'homme avec une pipe, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · November 1884 - May 1885 · Nuenen

Man's head with a pipe, F169Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A peasant wearing a black cap turns his head to the right, a long pipe squeezed between his lips. Its red scarf cuts the dark mass of the garment, while the green-gray background illuminates the profile and warm tones of the face.

Look at the work

The pipe extends the face and gives tension to the pose

The head occupies almost the entire width of the small format. The edge of the cap follows the forehead, then the nose, mouth and pipe pipe draw a diagonal which leads the eye towards the right angle.

The face is shaped by dirty yellows, pinks and browns placed in short shots. Behind him, the background becomes lighter on the right in order to clear the cheek and pipe.

Tête d'homme à la pipe F169/JH633 is an oil on canvas measuring 44.7 × 32 cm made in Nuenen between November 1884 and May 1885. It is kept at the Kroeller-Müller Museum under number KM 109.928.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The study shows Van Gogh learning to construct a figure without a rigid preparatory drawing. Certain disproportions remain visible, but color, look and accessories give the model an immediate presence.

01

The red scarf provides the main contrast

Its color responds to redness of the cheek and lips. Placed at the bottom of the portrait, it separates the warm face from the almost black jacket.

02

The bottom varies to move the head forward

The gray green is darker on the left and lighter around the right profile. This passage prevents the nose and the pipe from disappearing into space.

03

The blowjob deliberately accentuates the oblique

Its very inclined pipe crosses the light area at the bottom. The Kroeller-Müller Museum observes that the angle is unlikely, a sign of the artist's still groping research.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F169/JH633 and KM 109.928 identify this precise study among the series of men and women recruited by Van Gogh in the vicinity of Nuenen.

Models

Van Gogh is looking for new faces with Van Rappard

After excursions carried out in October 1884, the two painters visited the inhabitants house by house and found several people willing to pose.

Learning

The artist still works on proportions

The museum points out the eyes placed at different heights, the scarf knot in awkward perspective and the very low left shoulder.

Color

Red and green replace an academic model

The green-gray background, the red scarf and the warm touches of the skin build an opposition which makes the head readable despite its flat appearance.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must retain the black cap, the oblique gaze, the yellow and pink planes of the face, the red scarf, the long pipe and the transition from dark green to light green.

  • The black visor that descends above the forehead
  • Both eyes facing right
  • The red of the scarf tied under the chin
  • The long brown pipe of the pipe on a light background
  • The dark green - gray green transition behind the head
