Painted in 1938, The Frame (El Marco) is a unique work in the career of Frida Kahlo, as it is the first Mexican painting acquired by the Louvre Museum, and one of the few self-portraits painted on glass, in an aesthetic strongly influenced by Mexican folk art.

The very title, The Frame, is not accidental: Frida stages herself within a pictorial frame, in the manner of an ex-voto or a religious image, where the frame also becomes a subject. She presents herself as a sacred image, as a living relic, in a flat, decorative composition, but one charged with emotion and spirituality.

This work was exhibited in Paris at the invitation of André Breton, and purchased by the Louvre, thus becoming a historic work in the international recognition of Frida Kahlo as a full-fledged artist.
