À propos de l’œuvre

Trois paires de chaussures, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · December 1886 · Paris

Three pairs of shoes, F332Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Six worn shoes and ankle boots form an irregular pile on neutral ground. Some appear in profile, others reveal their opening or sole; laces, folds and tired leather transform these ordinary objects into silent portraits.

Look at the work

Three mismatched pairs make up a landscape of worn leather

A brown shoe juts out on its own to the left, while the tallest ankle boots group together in the center and right. The shapes overlap without alignment, as if they had just been placed at random.

The beige-gray background remains deliberately undefined. Short shadows anchor shoes, then seams, eyelets and laces create a network of more precise lines in the middle of the brushed fingerboard.

Three Pairs of Shoes F332/JH1234 is a 49.8 × 72.5 cm oil on canvas painted in Paris in December 1886. It is kept at the Fogg Museum of the Harvard Art Museums under number 1951.66.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The unity of the painting does not come from a symmetrical arrangement, but from the repetition of curved shapes and earthy colors. However, each shoe retains its orientation, its degree of wear and its visual personality.

01

The overlaps give depth without decoration

Heels, rods and points intersect each other. These superpositions are enough to organize three planes on an almost empty surface.

02

Blacks are constructed with several colors

Green, brown, blue and ocher appear in the darkest ankle boots. These passages avoid uniform black and make leather deformations visible.

03

The laces introduce a nervous design

Their buckles and ends pass through the heavy masses of the shoes. They draw the eye towards the openings and eyelets, where the pairs seem most lively.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F332/JH1234, inventory 1951.66 and dimensions 49.8 × 72.5 cm identify this Parisian still life with three pairs of shoes.

Signature

Van Gogh writes "VINCENT" in the upper right corner

The signature stands out discreetly against the neutral background. It contributes to the balance of the large empty area above the shoes.

Provenance

The work entered Harvard through the Maurice Wertheim legacy

The collector, a member of the Harvard class of 1906, bequeathed the painting to the Fogg Museum. The current inventory is 1951.66.

Period

The canvas was painted in Paris in December 1886

Van Gogh then gradually lightens his palette, but here retains the earths and colored blacks suitable for leather, placing them on a much lighter background.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must distinguish the six shoes, their laces, worn tips and soles, the brown shoe isolated on the left, the central black ankle boots and the gray beige background.

  • The reddish brown shoe placed on the far left
  • The two high ankle boots in the center of the cluster
  • Free laces and eyelet rows
  • Green and blue highlights in black leather
  • The VINCENT signature at the top right
