Look at the work

The wave occupies the foreground like a second cliff

The rock wall rises to the right and recedes towards the Needle, visible in the center. Below, the sea invades almost half of the canvas. Two silhouettes, one raising her arms, stand out in front of the foam and give a human measure to the storm.

The gray-blue sky is constructed by large moving touches. The rock combines cream, pink, green and purple; the sea mixes turquoise, gray and thick white. The crest of the wave erases the contours and connects air, water and sea spray.

In W826, the power of bad weather is measured by a contrast in scale: two fragile figures face the wave and the cliff.

An almost abstract foreground

The white foam unfolds in curved, superimposed gestures. It does not describe each wave, but immediately gives the weight, noise and speed of the water.

The cliff tightens the scene

The rock mass cuts the right edge and leads towards the Needle. This framing closes the view and reinforces the feeling of being placed very close to the rough shore.

A seaside resort deliberately absent

The museum notice points out that Monet rules out the bustling city located off-camera. The zigzag paths on the cliff remain the only discreet indicator of tourism.

Only one exact image of W826 is used. The real WebP measures 2,200 × 1,783 px and retains details of the cliff's foam, figures and paths.

Maintain the dominant wave

The foam should remain broad, opaque in places and irregular. Reducing it to a few white threads would remove its main energy from the work.

Color02

Preserve both figures

Their blue and red accents are tiny but essential. They must remain readable without becoming detailed characters that would distract from the landscape.

Matter03

Keep the cliff colorful

Pink, green, mauve and blue pass through the damp chalk. A uniformly gray rock would cause the effects of light to be lost despite the overcast sky.

Monet frames the sea and the cliffs, excluding Étretat, located just off-camera. The landscape thus seems almost wild despite the paths visible on the relief.

Provenance02

From Durand-Ruel to Jean-Baptiste Faure

The painting passed through Durand-Ruel in 1883 then into the collection of the baritone Jean-Baptiste Faure, an important supporter of the Impressionists, before returning to the merchant in 1901.

Acquisition03

The Felton Bequest of 1913

The National Gallery of Victoria acquired the work from Durand-Ruel thanks to the Felton bequest. It thus entered an Australian public collection very early on.
