Storm, coasts of Belle-Île W1116hand painted reproduction

A white and gray-green sea almost submerges the reefs of Belle-Île. Waves burst around purple rocks, while heavy skies reduce depth and make the entire canvas a field of movement. Signed and dated Claude Monet 86, this oil on canvas measuring 65.4 × 81.5 cm is kept at the Musée d'Orsay under the number RF 3163 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1116.

Look at the work

The wave erases the border between reefs and the sea

A vertical rock emerges in the foreground, slightly to the right of the center. Other black points frame the bottom and sides. In the middle, two large reefs are partly hidden by sheaves of foam.

White, gray, turquoise and pink cover the water in thick, oriented touches. The rocks take on purple, dark red and blue. The bluish-gray sky remains smoother, but it contributes to the same humid atmosphere.

The storm is not told by an anecdote: it can be read directly in the material, the directions of the brush and the disappearance of the contours.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

An almost entirely marine surface

The horizon is high and the reefs do not form a continuous coast. The water acts over the entire depth of the composition.

02

Rocks as points of resistance

The dark masses in the foreground and center interrupt the whites. They make it possible to measure the violence of the waves.

03

A foam made of colors

Light areas contain blue, pink, green and gray; this mixture avoids uniform white and makes the sea vibrant.

Read this specific version

A single exact image of W1116 is used in the listing and as the sole Shopify media. The real WebP measures 2,200 × 1,738 px and allows a detailed zoom on the material.

Composition01

Keep the dark rock in the foreground

Its vertical serves as an anchor in the middle of the circular movements of the water.

Color02

Preserve showers of foam around reefs

Their clear material must partially cover the stone without erasing all its contours.

Matter03

Keep the sky heavy and cold

It must remain distinct from the sea with a calmer touch, despite similar values.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Musée d'Orsay documents Tempête, Côtes de Belle-Île, oil on canvas from 1886, 65.4 × 81.5 cm, inventory RF 3163 and catalog Wildenstein 1116.

Signature01

Claude Monet 86 lower left

The dated inscription confirms the Breton countryside and remains visible under the agitated touches in the foreground.

Provenance02

A painting entered into the national collections by Gaston Migeon

After several owners, the work was bequeathed to the State in 1932 then assigned to the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.

Belle Island03

A painted rib in difficult conditions

Monet stayed on the island during the fall of 1886 and looked for patterns where the wind, rocks and sea required a physical experience of the landscape.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1116 version
  • The vertical rock in the foreground
  • Foam-drowned reefs
  • The white and gray-green material of the storm
