Look at the work

A fragmentary Venus shaped by color

The molding takes up almost the entire height of the cardboard. The inclined shoulders, the tightened waist and the slight offset of the hips give the body a flexibility that the clean cuts of the limbs do not freeze.

Van Gogh surrounds certain areas of brown and blue, then constructs the volume with visible touches. The cold background hollows out the space around the plaster and advances its warm tones.

Torso de Vénus F216b/JH1060 is an oil on cardboard measuring 46.4 × 38.1 cm painted in Paris in June 1886. The Van Gogh Museum preserves it under the inventory s0089V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Painting transforms an academic exercise from the ancient into research on colored contrasts. The depth comes as much from the surrounding blue as from the shadows placed on the body.

01

The fragment appears monumental

The torso fills the frame and approaches its edges. This proximity visually enlarges the molding despite the modest format of the cardboard.

02

The blue background creates depth

The museum highlights the spatial effect of this intense blue: the cream and pink edges of Venus seem to project forward.

03

Keys follow anatomy

Oblique marks accompany the ribs, stomach and thighs; they describe the volume without erasing the painter's gesture.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F216b/JH1060, the inventory s0089V1962 and the format of 46.4 × 38.1 cm distinguish this version among the studies of Venus carried out by Van Gogh.

Series

Five studies of the same model

Van Gogh painted this Venus standing in plaster five times, varying the framing, the background and the way of rendering the volume.

Collection

Two versions at the museum

The Van Gogh Museum preserves two paintings from this same cast, which allows you to directly compare the color and framing choices.

Atelier

A Parisian study after antique

Classic castings are used to work on proportions and modeling when live modeling is not available.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the discreet swaying of the hips, the clean cuts of the limbs, the colored whites, the ocher-brown shadows and the deep blue which surrounds the figure.

  • The oblique line of the shoulders
  • The waist tightened in the center
  • The subtle movement of the hips
  • The pink and cream touches of the plaster
  • The dark blue background in contact with the outline
