Garden in AuversReproduction of oil painting on canvas

A gravel path winds between the lawn, flower beds and very dark vegetation. In the middle of this garden without a walker, an almost discreet black chair becomes a silent landmark.

Look at the work

A familiar garden crossed by a winding path

The path starts from the lower edge, goes around a massif then disappears behind the lawn. White and red flowers punctuate the borders. To the right, a dark garden chair barely stands out from the dense shade of the shrubs.

Van Gogh contrasts the open spaces of the foreground with a wall of foliage made of blues, greens and blacks. The curves of the path and flowerbeds organize the visual walk. Short touches of the lawn slow down the gaze before the stronger agitation of the background.

The empty chair and path invite entry into the garden, while the dark vegetation maintains a sense of privacy.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The composition cataloged F814 can be recognized by the curved path, the white and red massif, the central lawn and the small black chair placed on the right.

01

A path as a guideline

The clear strip of gravel forms a flexible S. It connects the foreground to the bottom without resorting to a rigid architectural perspective.

02

Flowers in punctuation

The white and red touches are few in number but very visible. They punctuate the borders and prevent the greens from becoming monotonous.

03

An almost hidden chair

The black silhouette of the seat merges with the bushes. This human detail, without character, reinforces the silent and inhabited character of the place.

  • The S-curve of the gravel path in the foreground
  • The white and red flowers that line the lawn
  • The small black chair placed on the right
  • The diversity of greens, blues and blacks of the foliage
