Signed and dated Claude Monet 1881, this oil on canvas measuring 59.5 × 74.5 cm is kept at the Museum Barberini under the number MB-Mon-08 and corresponds to Wildenstein 666.

A terraced garden observed through the trees

The path starts from the bottom right and goes up towards the center, but the trunks in the foreground interrupt reading. Halfway up, six blue and white containers form a horizontal line. Further on, a second level of the garden and some architectural elements appear between the foliage.

The vegetation combines deep greens, light greens, whites, reds and yellows in thick touches. The blue stakes, decorated pots and cream path introduce geometric landmarks into this organic profusion.

The path invites you to enter, while the branches and stakes resist the gaze: the composition transforms a familiar garden into a modern space, fragmented like a snapshot.

A surface constructed like a tapestry

The very tight vegetation, the close framing and the bright colors reduce the depth. The plants become a network of touches where the gaze circulates.

The museum emphasizes that branches and stakes partially block the view. This obstruction gives photographic modernity to a space that is nevertheless topographically faithful.

Provenance03

A work acquired by Durand-Ruel in 1881

The gallery probably purchased the painting from Monet in April 1881 under the title La Maison de Campagne. After several international collections, she joined the Hasso Plattner collection.
