Claude Monet · A large painted decoration in Montgeron · Hermitage Museum

Garden corner in Montgeron W418hand painted reproduction

A flowered path descends towards the water, while the rose bushes and tall stems of the garden invade almost the entire surface. Monet transforms a corner of Montgeron Park into an immersive setting: the vegetation not only frames the view, it becomes the main material of the painting.

Look at the work

Garden opens with a path then closes in flowers

On the left, a clear passage descends between the massifs towards a body of blue water. The curve of the path serves as breathing space in the middle of tight vegetation. The edge of the pool and the vertical trunks provide some stable landmarks in this deliberately abundant space.

Pink and red rose bushes, tall leaves and grasses are built in small superimposed touches. The greens change from bright yellow to deep blue. In the distance, water and sky cool the palette and prevent the large format from becoming a uniform tapestry.

In Montgeron, Monet expands the outdoor experience to the scale of a decor intended to envelop the eye.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A discreet diagonal under the flowers

The path starts from the lower left edge and leads towards the pond. Its clear curve organizes the depth without imposing an architectural perspective.

02

Plant masses of different densities

The dark foliage in the foreground, the bright roses in the center, and the colder trees in the background create several planes without rigid outlines.

03

Water as a blue counterpoint

The small opening of the pool concentrates blues and grays. This calm area balances the energy of red, pink and green touches.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The unique reference corresponds to the Wildenstein 418 table kept under the inventory ʻoult-9152. The file of 1,476 × 1,317 px kept its native resolution, without enlargement, before its encoding in WebP.

Composition01

The path does not cut the garden in two

Its shape is partially hidden by plants. There must remain an invitation to enter space rather than a hard line.

Color02

Roses are not isolated points

The flowers group together in irregular layers made of reds, broken whites and roses, linked to the foliage by intermediate touches.

Matter03

Warm greens near the light

The yellow and olive passages give sunshine to the leaves, while the bluish greens maintain shade and depth.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1876, this monumental oil on canvas measuring 175 × 194 cm is kept in the Hermitage Museum under the inventory ʻonds-9152 and classified Wildenstein 418.

Order01

A setting for Ernest Hoschedé

Monet worked at the Château de Rottembourg, in Montgeron, at the request of collector Ernest Hoschedé. He designed several large canvases for the living room of the residence.

Together02

Four panels linked to the domain

The program includes this garden, Les Dindons, L'Étang à Montgeron and a hunting scene. Each composition transforms a motif from the park into a very large format decor.

Provenance03

From the Morozov collection to the Hermitage

After several changes of ownership, the work belonged to the Moscow collector Ivan Morozov. She then joined the Russian public collections and entered the Hermitage in 1948.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the clear curve of the path towards the pond.
  • Maintain density differences between each massif.
  • Preserve the roses in irregular touches, without drawing them one by one.
  • Holding the blue opening of the water and sky at the bottom.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This large, vibrant garden is suitable for a spacious living room, dining room or room open to greenery. A natural oak, deep green or matte gold setting accompanies the roses without competing with the richness of the foliage.
