À propos de l’œuvre
Arbre fouetté par le vent, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · August 1883 · The Hague, Netherlands
Wind whipped tree, F10Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A solitary tree curves to the right, its trunk and branches seeming to give way in a continuous gust. The dark silhouette was enough to make visible the force of the wind in this landscape painted in The Hague in August 1883.
Look at the work
An inclined trunk that makes the wind visible
The tree emerges near the left edge then divides into long, almost horizontal branches. Three irregular masses of foliage are carried to the right, while the crown remains open and jagged.
A dark strip of vegetation closes the horizon. The yellow-green sky occupies most of the painting and contains few details: this light expanse accentuates the black line of the trunk and the imbalance of the crown.
Wind Whipped Tree F10/JH384 is a 35 × 47 cm oil on canvas painted in The Hague in August 1883. Stolen in 1997 from a private collection, the work remains unknown today.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The feeling of movement arises less from the accumulation of keys than from the general geometry of the shaft. All main lines lean or extend in the same direction.
The trunk resists by bending
Its base is firmly planted in the ground, but the axis quickly breaks to the right. This inflection transforms the plant silhouette into a tense gesture.
The branches indicate the gust
The upper branches lengthen almost horizontally and the clumps of leaves concentrate under their ends. The void between them makes you feel the losses and the tremors.
The clear sky isolates the form
Yellows, pale greens and grays form a low contrast background. The black-brown tree thus becomes readable like calligraphy, while the line of the field stabilizes the bottom of the painting.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The Faille and Hulsker catalogs list this painting under F10/JH384. The dimensions, date and location of creation are documented, but the absence of the work since its theft limits the availability of recent color photographs.
A work stolen in 1997
The painting was in a private collection when it was stolen. Its current location remains unknown, which explains the rarity of reliable photographic reproductions.
The last landscapes of The Hague
Van Gogh painted F10 in August 1883, a few weeks before leaving The Hague for Drenthe. The wind, dunes and exposed trees belong to his direct observation of the coastline.
A compact landscape of 35 × 47 cm
The horizontal format gives the branches the space to deploy. The low horizon line reserves most of the surface for the sky and the silhouette.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
Fidelity depends on the precise curve of the trunk, the branches stretched to the right, the three clusters of foliage, the dark horizon and the deliberately not very detailed yellow-green sky.
- The broken curve of the trunk
- Branches pushed to the right
- The three masses of foliage
- The dark strip of the horizon
- The vast yellow-green sky

An expressive silhouette in ocher, green and brown
The tree creates a powerful graphic accent in an office, hallway or living room. Red earths, muted yellows and olive green accompany dark wood, natural linen and sandy walls.
