Claude Monet · The railway crosses a meadow · Musée d'Orsay
A green meadow extends in front of a curtain of trees, walked by a few walkers in light clothing. Above the hedge, a line of wagons and a plume of smoke reveal the passage of the train. Monet introduces railway modernity without sacrificing the calm or scale of the landscape.

Look at the work
The meadow occupies more than half of the painting. A young, slender tree stands almost in the center and several tiny walkers advance towards the shadow of the woods. The railway line remains hidden by a dense hedge.
Only the dark silhouettes of the wagons appear between foliage and sky. The locomotive is invisible; its presence can be read in the gray plume which progresses above the peaks and mixes with the cream clouds.
The machine does not dominate the countryside: it crosses it discreetly, visible above all by the horizontal rhythm of its wagons and its smoke.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Meadow, wooded edge and sky organize space into simple areas. The wagons fit exactly on the border between trees and light.
Its thin trunk connects the meadow to the sky and gives the scale of the hedge, the train and the walkers.
The figures' clothing responds to clouds and the plume of steam, creating light relays between the foreground and the horizon.
Reference image
The unique reference corresponds to the work MNR 218 kept at the Musée d'Orsay. The file of 2,200 × 1,639 px retained its native resolution, without enlargement, before its conversion to WebP.
A faithful reproduction must not invent a detailed machine: the smoke and the wagons are enough to announce the passage.
The meadow combines olive yellow, muted greens and gray shadows. These variations maintain light without making the grass uniform.
Dresses, hats and parasols are small light touches; their scale protects the silent monumentality of the landscape.
Documented benchmarks
This oil on canvas measuring 50 × 65.3 cm, dated around 1870-1871 by Daniel Wildenstein, is kept at the Musée d'Orsay under number MNR 218 and classified Wildenstein 153.
Monet treats the train with restraint: the wagons and smoke are integrated into the edge rather than presented as a portrait of a machine.
Found in Germany after the Second World War, the painting was entrusted to the guard of the National Museums in 1950; it did not enter through an ordinary acquisition.
After the Louvre and the Jeu de Paume gallery, the work was assigned to the Musée d'Orsay in 1986 and returned from a deposit in Angers in 2009.
