A zigzag perspective
The edge of the path, the low walls and the staircase form a series of angles which lead the gaze towards the village. The depth remains readable despite the density of the material.

Vincent van Gogh · End of May - mid-June 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France
A winding path, a steep staircase and flowering trees transform a street in Auvers into an almost moving landscape. Van Gogh interweaves figures, houses and vegetation in a dense composition where every direction of the brush counts.
Look at the work
The clear path enters the canvas through the foreground, turns abruptly then joins the staircase placed in the center. An elderly man comes down with a cane, while two groups of women occupy the sides of the road. Their silhouettes give the scale of this narrow slope between walls and foliage.
The view rests almost not on the sky: the flowering chestnut trees, embankments and facades fill the space. Green and blue curves run along the roadway, then change direction around the steps and trunks. Van Gogh thus makes the relief of Auvers felt without smoothing the topography.
The gaze advances with the path, stumbles on the stairs then disperses into the branches: depth is born from the very movement of the key.
Composition, touch and color
This version can be recognized by the central staircase, the old man who descends it, the four women spread out on the path and the chestnut trees in bloom.
The edge of the path, the low walls and the staircase form a series of angles which lead the gaze towards the village. The depth remains readable despite the density of the material.
The figures are small, but their dark clothing and distinct attitudes punctuate traffic. They do not tell a specific anecdote: they make the street inhabited.
The curved touches of the trees mingle with the lines of the ground and facades. This continuity gives the impression that the entire site is subject to the same rhythm.

Your reproduction
The reproduction must preserve the very precise path of the lines, the place of each figure and the changes of touch which separate the road, the steps, the houses and the foliage.
