À propos de l’œuvre
Arbres dans le jardin de l'asile, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · October 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France
Trees in the asylum gardenReproduction of oil painting on canvas
Two cropped trunks frame an alley, while the autumn foliage bursts into yellow, orange, green and red. Painted very quickly in the park of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, this small canvas retains a feeling of immediate immersion.
Look at the work
A narrow path caught between two immense trunks
The blue-gray trunk on the right forms a vertical wall, while the one on the left branches before leaving the frame. Between them, a clear path turns towards a bench and a small fence placed in the middle of the garden.
The trees in the background are treated like colored masses: orange-yellow on the left, dark green in the center, red-brown further away. The blue touches of the sky and the trunks cool this autumnal dominant.
The framing gives less the impression of looking at a garden than of standing inside, at trunk height and very close to the path.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
This oil on canvas measuring 41.6 × 33.5 cm is referenced F731/JH1801. It remains in a private collection.
Two trees used as uprights
Large trunks are cut at the top and bottom. They structure the canvas like the edges of a window, without becoming symmetrical: the right trunk is massive, the left thinner and branched.
The path opens a short depth
The large yellow area of the foreground quickly narrows towards the fence and the bench. A few blue-gray and brown bands are enough to mark the edges.
Autumn divided into islands of color
Van Gogh does not mix all the foliage. Each group keeps its dominant range - orange, green, red or blue - and remains readable despite the tangle of branches.

A canvas painted at first glance
Christie's notice underlines the immediacy of the painting and an execution probably carried out in a single session, at the moment when the autumn colors were reaching their intensity.

Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must preserve the disproportion of the two trunks, the bend in the path, the small bench, the fence and the groups of foliage which each keep their color.
- The blue-gray trunk which closes the entire right edge
- The dark bifurcation of the left trunk
- The yellow path which narrows towards the bench
- The orange, green and red masses of the background
