À propos de l’œuvre

Trophée de chasse, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Game, rifles and hunting accessories · Fabre Museum

W10 hunting trophyhand painted reproduction

Two rifles cross over a pile of pheasants, woodcocks and hunting accessories. A powder horn hangs on the light wall, while a dark bag and birds occupy the table in the foreground. Signed and dated 1862, this ambitious still life shows young Monet attentive to the tradition of Chardin and the animal painting of Constant Troyon.

Look at the work

The crossing of rifles commands an abundance of feathers and objects

The black cannons rise diagonally from the game group and intersect near the upper edge. A brown powder horn, suspended on the right, responds to their curves. These lines divide the light background into triangles and give momentum to the vertical format.

On the table, the birds overlap in no apparent order: red, brown, gray and white plumages form a dense mass, interrupted by beaks, wings and legs. The very dark fabric and bag deepen the center and bring out the red pheasant in the foreground.

Before painting the reflections of the Seine, Monet tests his material here on metal, leather and the almost tactile variety of plumages.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A large still life designed to impress

At over a meter in height, the composition exceeds the scale of a simple study. The rifles extend the table vertically and give the game an almost monumental presentation.

02

The influence of Troyon and the old masters

Constant Troyon's animal painting marks young Monet, while the accumulation of game recalls Chardin and the French tradition of the hunting trophy.

03

A clearly dated youth signature

The inscription "OC Monet 62" appears at the bottom right. She again associates Oscar with Claude and precisely places this painting among the painter's first ambitious works.

Read this specific version

The visual corresponds to the Hunting Trophy of 1862, MNR 213, deposit D2006.3.1 at the Fabre museum and Wildenstein 10 catalog. The unique WebP measures 425 × 600 px, maximum definition of the exact public file available, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

The rifles structure without dominating all the details

Their almost black barrels are bordered by brown and gray reflections. Too uniform lines would make their volume and the patina of the metal disappear.

Color02

Each plumage has its own temperature

Copper red of the pheasant, gray-brown of the side birds and small white touches must remain distinct within the dark mass.

Matter03

The light background contains warm shadows

Beiges, pinks and grays shape the wall behind the objects. This variety detaches silhouettes without creating an artificially harsh contrast.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Signed and dated 1862, this oil on canvas measures 104 × 75 cm. Listed Wildenstein 10, it bears the number MNR 213 and is deposited at the Fabre museum under inventory D2006.3.1.

Status01

A work National Museums recovery

Recovered in Germany by the Allies in 1945 then repatriated to France, the painting is kept pending the identification of its rightful owners. Its MNR status is distinct from an ordinary acquisition.

Deposit02

From the Musée d'Orsay to the Musée Fabre in 2006

The State entrusts the work to the Fabre museum, where it bears the deposit number D2006.3.1. The institutional sheet indicates that it is currently kept in reserve.

Iconography03

Pheasants, woodcocks, guns, bag and powder horn

The hunting repertoire allows Monet to confront brilliant, supple and rough materials in a skillfully organized composition.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the large crossing of rifles.
  • Dissociate the different plumages.
  • Keep the central mass deep but readable.
  • Preserve the colored shadows of the light background.
